People in Fort Greene and Clinton Hill also have the Bed-Stuy Y. It's a huge facility located just over the Clinton Hill/Bed-Stuy border. That said, Crunch isn't the only game in town.
-
thanks, i really appreciate the response

Somewhere along Fulton Street in Clinton Hill would be a good idea -- you'd be filling a real void, geographically and otherwise.
-
fulton has some real possibilities. thats what i was hoping to hear....
-
Honestly, I have the workout doldrums in our neighborhood so I'd be happy to see another option pop up. I particularly like the idea of a small group being able to do their thing somewhere that isn't Crunch or the Y. Clinton Hill could certainly prove to be a lucrative location for something of this nature as st jameson points out. It's certainly under-served in the options department.
brooklynprivategym, maybe you could hook up with some yoga and/or pilates instructors and fill a HUGE void in the area? then maybe you'd be able to share some overhead while still maintaining the private vibe?
I for one would go to a spot on Fulton in Clinton Hill... -
the space i'm able to find will pretty much determine what type of facility i'm able to do. under 1000 sq ft means one type of private facility serving a niche... over that means more flexibility with offerings at different price points.
i see tons of stuff in park slope/prospect park but i'm not so interested in that area...it's saturated there and i like the diversity better in fg/ch area. -
Every night around 6:30pm I get off the C train at Clinton / Washington and about 75 - 100 members of the new gentry pour out with me, onto Fulton street, where there is very little retail aimed at newcomers to this neighborhood. Don't get me wrong, I love Happy Happy Chinese Restaurant as much as the next guy. I think a gym would be a very welcome addition to the mix.
That particular C stop serves a very wide area, including Clinton Hill, Prospect Heights, and some of Bed Stuy. Seems to me if you can find the right venue it's a slam dunk for years to come. -
stjameson...i had a meeting today that was promising....and you're exactly right about that corner, i'm hoping to get something right there or near there....
-
There was a yoga/dance studio in the building that is now the Capital One Bank back around 4 or 5 years ago. I loved it felt the loss when it closed. The neighborhood has only gotten more populous since then what with all the new buildings and renovations on and just off Fulton. Good luck!
-
ooooh, this is terrific. i live right on the prospect heights / clinton hill border and know a ton of people that are need of a gym nearby. good luck!
-
the space im looking at rt now has options for two types of fitness businesses:
an a la cart type personal training & class center....
- personal training & hourly rental to personal trainers
- small group training (private training for sayyy 5 person groups)
- yoga/pilates classes (cap 20-30 people, i think)
- cardio/strength interval conditioning classes
OR
***another entirely different idea is to offer a truly high service private gym environment that would be available 5am-9pm to members only with personal training an optional expense. because of the space, it would have to be pricey....in the $300/month membership zone...with a cap on the membership at 100 members.
i'm in a second talk now so thats good
please post your suggestions and thanks again for the responses!
hmmm, reading about on tons of blogs...seems like many have experienced instability with the 'member' type situations...i'm more inclined toward the session package/class card type of system so no one has to feel locked in. -
My instinct is that the more public version will go further in this neighborhood. An expensive boutique training session thing would probably attract more business in the Slope. Or Upper East.
-
My knee jerk reaction is that $300/month is very high for this area, despite the appealing luxury of a small, private facility. I could definitely see a market in Williamsburg, but not here. You'll appeal to many more people with a more approachable business model ie the public version juniper refers to.

ya, i think you're right.
i want to land squarely in the middle...ACCESSIBLE. -
I'm thinking to do the more expensive personal training service in the am hours and then use the pm hours for group classes.

hey there gang.... i wanted to post the wrap up of what transpired with attempting to bring my fitness business to fort greene. it just didnt work out unfortunately. i saw everything, looked at everything, but couldn't find the right landlord/price/renovation status combination.
- I couldn't find the kind of space I needed in Fort Greene without having to take a loan to gut/renovate, OR possibly deal with a sketchy landlord, or having the price jacked up when I came through the door. So unfortunately it did not work out, this time around. I WILL do boot camp classes in Fort Greene Park in the spring though
and I will open a second location in Fort Greene somehow, by this time next year. I only had a couple of months to look and either the right deal shows up the right way or it doesn't. So this time it didn't.
This is what I did find...
- I found newly, eco-designed, fully renovated space in SoHo at the price I wanted, with a complete full bathroom and 1200 sq ft. on Broadway & Howard sts in SoHo.
- My monthly semi-private boot camp classes start in Jan 12 class series is $400 included is a full fitness assessment and bodyfat/measurements etc before & after as well as my 14 Day Miracle Menu Diet Plans. The first series is called The 60 Minute Burn & meets Tue/Thu @7am and Saturdays @ 10. More will be added throughout 2010.
In Spring 2010 I plan on running an evening boot camp in Fort Greene Park at 6:30 pm Monday-Friday that will run until it snows. I'm hoping to get that going in April.
I'm really bummed that it didn't work out to get everything going here like I wanted to ....but 6 months of a recession finally brought some reason to at least one landlord in SoHo, and she gave me exactly what I needed the way I needed it in order to keep my business profitable.
I dealt with some great people and some, not so great.
The great was Anthony @Crewstown realty, and a n independent agent named Jaqui, and if you need her number PM me. -
