This was too funny to pass up. We've known all along that Glenn Beck is a two-bit phony. Now we see how Glenn Beck gets himself properly weepy for the cameras: A little Vicks Vaporub.

One might dismiss this as merely a one-off for this shoot. But you can hear Beck himself say:

Beck: I think it's getting used to it -- my eyes are getting used to it.

From regular and continuous use, mayhaps?

The whole scene reminds us that Beck practices his schtick over and over before he performs. Which means he's gotten real good at working up those tears and choking up to say, "I love my country -- but I fear for it!"

This may be what Sen. Lindsey Graham had in mind yesterday:

http://link.brightcove.com/services/player/bcpid30183074001?bctid=42981023001

Via Sam Stein:

"Only in America can you make that much money crying," Graham said of Beck. "Glenn Beck is not aligned with any party. He is aligned with cynicism and there has always been a market for cynics. But we became a great nation not because we are a nation of cynics. We became a great nation because we are a nation of believers."

In other Beck news:

-- Media Matters has an excellent followup to the Salon piece about Beck's disciplehood at the feet of W. Cleon Skousen -- which in turn illustrated Beck's long history of promoting extremist beliefs -- pointing out that Skousen was not exactly what you would call ... enlightened on matters of race:

Fox News' Glenn Beck has heavily promoted the writings of far-right activist W. Cleon Skousen, even making Skousen's book, The 5000 Year Leap, a central part of his 9-12 Project. Skousen is the author of several controversial works, including The Making of America: The Substance and Meaning of the Constitution, which presented as "the story of slavery in America" a passage from a book that attacked abolitionists for delaying emancipation; cast slave owners as "the worst victims of the system"; claimed white schoolchildren "were likely to envy the freedom of their colored playmates"; and claimed that "[s]lavery did not make white labor unrespectable, but merely inefficient," because "the slave had a deliberateness of motion which no amount of supervision could quicken."

This continues to remind me of last week's interview with Katie Couric, when he refused to explain what he meant by white culture.

-- Beck is having a little difficulty dealing with Internet memes. Especially when dealing with charges that, by golly, we haven't been able to disprove yet!

-- Finally, has anyone else noticed that, on the cover of his new book, Beck looks exactly like the illegitimate love child of Colonel Klink and Sergeant Schultz? Just wondering.

    you're silly.
  • so his fans say.

    they're mistaken. and possibly stupid.
I wish he weren't such a frothing behemoth in the Fox cage, on display for poking. So cruel...
  • but pitu! he's the only one with the courage to tell the truth!

I'm gonna send a car over because you have clearly lost your mind!

  • Definitely not a newsman, but he still scooped the New York Times, CBS, NBC, ABC by *weeks* on major stories. As John Stewart says, Where the hell are the real reporters? If they weren't so partisan in what they cover (or suppress), perhaps people like Beck wouldn't have such a big audience.
  • I don't see any difference between Beck and Oberman to be frank. They're both on the air to tow the party line.

Just for kicks, I did a search "Glenn Beck is" and ended up entertained for a while.

I see a difference. I don't much watch either of them because I don't like the shock jock-ish style of commentary <--- that's where I agree they're the same.

The difference is the outright lies that Beck tells. It's all a joke and his crew just makes stuff up. Olberman appears to have a tighter rein on actual factual information, but presents it in that macho baiting sports guy stir-it-up and calls people names kinda way.

Gabe, I finally watched that VicksVapoTears video. Too funny.
  • Hmm, not bad for a "liar".

Glenn Beck Viewership Beats The Combined Competition Every Night In September

Those with any doubt what a good move it was for Fox News to pick up Glenn Beck look no further than the chart below. His average viewership at 5pm exceeded the combined viewership of his three cable news network competitors every night in September. On six nights he had twice the combined viewership.

That's because most people with more education don't get their news from TV.

    His average viewership at 5pm . . .
^^^ there's an important bit - at 5pm. That timeslot has more or less dropped off the charts for at least 10 years. Local b'cast stations drop their news at 5pm and do better numbers with Judge Judy. Beck v Judge Judy, how's it going?

And of course that thing about tv no longer being a news source...
  • p.s. what *is* that tv by the numbers site? Bizarre readership demographic
    http://www.quantcast.com/tvbythenumbers.com/traffic#summary
Older white males who are paid $30k-$100K, more than half went to college, and
    88% no children?
Is this some sort of perfect curmudgeon storm?
  • Looks like someone on his staff is not on his side! (or else how did this wind up on the youtubes?)

But....wait a minute....does this mean that maybe other things on tv are not real?!?
  • that's like arguing brittney spears is a good musician b/c she had high record sales.

and you don't have to put "liar" in quotes.

oversimplification almost to the point of false of equivalence.

both are very partisan, however their relationships to truthiness are quite different.
