Library Closing
I just read on BrooklynPaper.com that the Park Slope library on 6th ave. and 9th street will be closing at the end of October for renovations. The renovations are supposed to take 2 years.
Although it's historic, the place is a dump and it's hard to sit in there for more than 5 minutes. It can use the renovation, but I'm bummed I won't have access to it for years.

It's a good place for picking up books you have on reserve but a lousy library for browsing. I know they're putting in central a/c - better lighting would also be a huge plus.
Just logged on to the BPL site to see what will happen to my books on hold for a Park Slope branch pickup, and whoa! New website design - user friendly, new features, you can save your reading list and rate books - nice upgrades. -
I'm glad to hear that branch is getting a reno, it really needs it!

Anyone know what that means for us over the next 2 years? Will they have a trailer or something for us to pick up books, or are we going to have to start doing field trips to other branches?
Also: does anyone else feel that 2 years is an outrageously long closure for this sort of work? -
Slightly off topic, but my mom just told me the Denver library had bed bugs and had to close and get rid of a boatload of books. It is for this reason that I have been afraid to go to any library. So now thanks to those beasts I can't go to the Pavillion or any library. I know this was a planned closing, but I am suspicious nonetheless.

The branch on Pacific & 4th Avenue is the closest library. There will also be a bookmobile 2 days a week in front of the PS library - mid-afternoon, no evenings.
I don't think 18-24 months is too long - they'll be renovating the entire building - and will also make it ADL compliant. -

Not to hijack this thread, but I googled this and it is true, according to the local Denver TV news stations.
Been checking out dvds for a while, and just started checking out books from the main branch public library.
Now I may stop.
I had BBs about three years ago and it was a nightmare I never want to re-live. -
Well if you're not going to use a library because one library had bedbugs, I suggest that you never stay in a hotel again because more than one have had that problem.
-
bedbugs have been found on a number of the wooden benches in the nyc subway system also.
so don't sit on those either if you are concerned... -
Yep. Those who live in fear absolutely avoid subway benches and hotels. The few times I stayed in a hotel recently I tore it apart double checking for signs. It's scary.

that library is a dump. a perfect example of what a library is NOT supposed to be.loud, chaotic, no place to quietly browse, kids waiting to play games online, kids running around while their caregivers pretend not to notice...please. if libraries were anything like they're supposed to be, maybe the new planners will take BOOKS and READING into account when designing it.
-
I've been going to that library for years....no, it is not as nice as the main library but it's fine (especially since you can now reserve books online). I have never found it loud (and I'm there almost every Saturday). It is a wonderful resource and I will definitely miss it as it is so close to me (but I know the building needs renovation)
-
That blows. Seriously. It's so nice to have a library in the neighborhood. Two years? Are they making the librarians do the renovations or something? How long did it take to build Yankee stadium? I don't think it took that long.
-
I could be mistaken, but I suspect the Yankees expect to make a lot more profit from the new stadium than the city expects to make from the renovated library... thus the difference in speed.

I love Grand Army Plaza. Such an easy walk. Such magnificent history.

The Pavillion has bed bugs?? -
Yep. Got a bite a few weeks ago while in big theater for Julia and Julia. Didn't sleep for a long time hoping didn't bring it home. Never going again.
-
Do people sleep in the Denver library? Are there mattresses there?
-
Of course not. But people take books out and have bed bugs and the bed bugs go back in the books.
Howdy, Stranger!
