I had to redo my forum bookmarks after yesterday's outage to be automatically logged in again...

I'm not into the World Cup but being half Polish I was a bit disappointed in today's results. :(
  • the bar was good
they had wheat beer on tap
and they allowed 1 dog in for the match
at halftime, the bar was full of white shirts with red stripes
by game's end. the white shirts had disappeared

female soccer hooligans were in the minority
  • merde. merde. this guest post was mine

Logging in once doesn't do it for me - I have to log in twice, back-to-back to stay logged.

if you find the place for those sister hooligans, let me know, eh? I've got the secret handshake figured out.
    T+T v Sweden!
My pal says The Gate is opening for some of the early games - what is Black Sheep doing?

  • thx Carnivore for the staying-logged-in info -- working for me so far

T+T in a draw with Sweden this am (YEAH!)
Black Sheep was amiable, and the tv is nice and big. The crowd at Sugarcane on Flatbush was rockin', but their tellys are small. Good fun tho, and if you're needing a Soca Warriors tshirt for Thursday, that's a place to start.

    I so sad for Cote D'Ivoire . . .

teeny weeny telly not good tho' :(

what happened to Cote D'Ivorie? :o
  • World Cup = very darkside nationalism

World Cup = drunk, under-educated, violence-prone Brits and Germans

World Cup = nascent racism from Eastern Europe given voice. Isn't it lovely to hear all those "monkey" sounds whenever a balck player takes the filed or does well.

A bar seems an appropraite venue in which to view the above.

the world cup is the place where 11 men
from ecuador, a small banana republic

11 black men, who grew up with hunger in their belly
    get to show the world
that when the barriers to entry are reasonable
that these men are just as good and better
    than the dominant euroamerican fascists

the ignorant monkeys exist all over the world
what would you have be done -- genocide them?

    i like the world cup

i like to see the ignorant monkeys in plain sight

Hate to say it, but I actually rather agree with this. Since "real" nationalism and religion are somewhat frowned upon in Europe nowadays, all those ooky feelings tend to be discharged behind the fig-leaf of football. It's a mess to clean up, but I'll route for Ecuador once the US is out. Which should be shortly.

BUT, bars do rule for viewing sporting events. Say, um, Liveto, you following this Stanley Cup Final?
  • How was the BAR, silly
I showed up at Black Sheep right after the game was over so I can't tell you how it would be during a match. But the screen was huge, the bartenders were cool as hell, decent jukebox, they have outdoor seating, AND a foosball table. Need I say more?

Yes, all of these things happen and yes, all of these things are reflections of elements of each of their respective nations, but you're making the situation far too simplistic. The overwhelming majority of people watching the matches are simply pulling for a team and showing some positive national pride. Just because the bad apples exist does not mean they are representative of the nations, its fans, or the sport any more than a few drunken assholes who throw batteries at a Yankees game are representative of baseball fans.
  • Drano - Stanley Cup - no way! If it wasn't a sport those guyswould be arrsted for assault and battery. Like George Carlin used to say, I'll take my sports with a side of pastoral.

Addiced to the French Open though ;-)
  • anyone know of a good World Cup web site to keep abreast of things?

Czechoslovakia is up 1-0 over the US right now. merde :(
  • this is from the sweden - trinidad/tobago game

    :D
It was a totally hot game!
USA was down by 2 at the half. I just can't get involved . . .
  • That picture makes me want to watch more soccer!

That said, I'm going to Spain this week and will find me some soccer boys
  • USA just got owned 0 - 3 by Czechslovakia

keep in mind the Czech republic is ranked #2 in the world
  • Did anyone go to the games this past weekend at Black Sheep? What was the turnout like? Looking for a decent crowd for the USA/Italy game.

I was at Black Sheep on Saturday for T+T v Sweden and most of the chairs were filled - noon game. The have the best projection tv.

Loki on Fifth also has tv, projection and flags hanging everywhere. Crowd was slim on Sunday.

The Gate has regular-sized tv but bonus points for a nice English bartender who understands your love of futbol. We were there for the very quiet Sunday afternoon Mexico v Iran . . . bet the crowd will be bigger for the USA game . . .
  • Yeah, I was in Manhattan for the Czech game, and it was freaking nuts. Packed like sardines at Nevada Smiths, but having wall to wall people signing the national anthem and rooting on your home country was freaking cool.

That said, I won't even attempt that this weekend, it will be off the wall crazy.
  • the USA - Italia game will be on at 2:30pm
so i'll go catch the 2nd half at Black Sheep on saturday
  • aw merde :(
Poland just played an oustanding match with Germany
and they lost it 0-1 on a last minute goal by Germany

now Ecuador is gonna have to crush Costa Rica thursday

my hugs and tears go out to all my Polish friends
  • For anybody watching the Korea game this weekend, 32nd street is the place to do it. I watched the Korea vs. Togo game on the screen they had setup outside. The sidewalks were a sea of Koreans dressed in red and singing various Korean cheers. The police eventually showed up and setup barriers because people were spilling off the sidewalk and onto the street.

Busses with people onboard would pass through and you'd see the look of amusement or shock on their faces. I'm sure the turnout for a weekend will be even better.
  • ECUADOR
    ECUADOR
    ECUADOR

    GGGGGGGGGGGGGOooooooooooooooooooollllllllll

    3 - 0 against Costa Rica

next game is against Germany on Tuesday.
    niceeeeeeeee

  • My fiance is from Ecuador, so I am definitely rooting for them! Her family has been going nuts since last Friday.
