Franklin Park opening a restaurant?
Comments
-
I heard that they were opening one in the room now used to the CSA -- it's a gross room with no lights, electricity, etc...so I can't imagine it's any time soon.
-
They've been planning this for a while- actually 2 places- one is supposed to be a brick oven pizza (that small building to the left when you walk in) and the sit down place is supposed to go through the newer portion and out onto Franklin. I actually forgot they were going to do this- been so long ago...
-
This has been in the works so long I thought they had given up on the idea. Wasn't the large indoor space originally supposed to be the restaurant?
-
"Also, the Dutch Boy Paints sign on Franklin at St. John's has come down. I thoroughly enjoyed this vintage piece of the storefront, so I hope that whatever comes in is worth the loss."
From "I Love Franklin Avenue" Blog.
That's the Franklin Park spot. ...so maybe something is happening? -
A birdie whispered that it's going to be a burger joint on Franklin.
-
I asked the bartender and it should be open in a couple of months.

He seems to confirm: (from "i love franklin ave" blog)
"The nascent Franklin Avenue restaurant scene is about to get a boost from Franklin Park owner Matt Roff, whose ever-growing complex of converted garages and storefronts has become an anchor of neighborhood nightlife. The latest venture? "A day care center," joked Roff when I encountered him outside his gutted storefront this morning, which previously housed a hardware store. The space, which until recently sported one of the best vintage signs in Crown Heights and sits next door to the soon-to-be-opening Breukelen Coffee House, will be a burger joint serving "a couple of great burgers, some vegetarian options, and maybe a sausage or two," says Roff, who hopes to open in a month to six weeks.
Best of all, the new place will connect at the back to the 'big room' bar at Franklin Park, providing good food to accompany Franklin Park's good beer. As for the beloved sign, it's being cleaned by a professional for a new lease on life inside the burger place, which may even adopt the name "Dutch Boy Burgers" (they're looking into the legal ramifications of borrowing an old logo and name)." -
I went this afternoon and I must say this place is great - just what the neighborhood needed. The coffee was excellent . Also I had a yummy and very moist vegan muffin there (not the out of a package dry kind). They also have baked goods from Balthazar in Soho every day. A minor miracle of a place, on Franklin Avenue. I've been waiting for something like this....

i'm assuming this is for the wrong place... -
Walking past this space on my way home last night, I noticed the lights on and I could see inside. They've done a lot of work in there behind that blue tarp! The counter, floors and some fixtures seem to be finished and there are tables. I hope they'll be opening their doors very soon--been missing Homage and looking forward to a good burger in the 'hood!

They've been saying that forever. Matt, Toli and I all have the same landlord, who told me it was going to be a sandwich shop (I guess burgers fall into that group).
I've also heard from Lisa (bartender) that she is biding her time until the place opens and she can put on her Head Chef hat.
As for the CSA place (624A)... Toli asked me a few months ago if I wanted it, as a joke I guess he's trying to push it on someone (he asked the Happy Wok guy, too)... so I think they haven't decided on that yet. But they do own it (er, rent it from the same landlord). -
Awning is up. Dutch Boy Burgers. Burgers, fries, root beer floats... Should be opening soon.

Nice! -
They have a stop work order on their window today. ugh. i don't know anything more than that. but peaking in the window, it looks really nice..
-
It doesn't sound like they are worried about the Stop Work Order.
http://newyork.craigslist.org/brk/fbh/1624305066.html
...but they are confused about being in Prospect Heights. -
The stop work order was issued back in Dec. and I heard they have fixed whatever problems led to the SWO. Now they're just waiting for an inspector to clear them to open. At least that's what I heard.

I wonder whether it will be possible to order food from there while at FP. Also, if so, I wonder whether one will still be permitted to order in from elsewhere. I love the outdoor seating area with Chavella's when the weather is nice.
Once this place opens, would people be down for a CH happy hour at FP? -
According to IloveFranklinAvenue, you'll be able to get beers at the restaurant and get food at the bar, but you have to walk between the two places -- they're connected by a hallway by where the bathrooms are now in the bigger part of Franklin Park. Not sure if you'll be able to order other outside food, but I would imagine. A bar that lets me order Chavellas is the best place in the world. I hope they don't take that.

I reaallyy doubt they wouldn't let outside food in. From the looks of Dutch Boy they're gonna have their plate very full, customer-wise, right from the get-go, and will probably be relieved when folks order from elsewhere. Seating capacity is so enormous in FP that what we might be looking at is a packed house, even on weekday nights, thanks to the spillover from Dutchboy.
So, like I'm sure many have thought, and nothing against FP, but, when do we get a second/alternate bar? To mix things up? Abigail's, you could have been that.
As for having to cart our own food/beer around between the two places: I will definitely take that over all the "no deliveries after 10" places around here. -
Not sure if take out will be allowed now...

enh, i'm not impressed that soda has ever worried over providing lousy service to its customers, so i somehow doubt FP will care if being busy means you wait on your burger.
i have been mourning the loss of the chavella's beer garden since this was first announced.
sigh. -

Forget beer garden,we are road building! Where else in an@80 year old area can you make new road that connects Franklin with Sterling! Where else can you skirt the bldg code and NYS Liquor Authority in the blink of and eye. 95S should be able to lease residential back yards and go for a full all night BBQ funk haven. They should offer blunt rolling and prison tattoo techniques preschool credits so when a child is kept up night it's not a total waste.Sepia and everybody else should open their backyards til 4am no matter what the public outcry. Franklin Park should provide window pillows and bowls of pretzels for the backyard locals so all are able to engage the drunks at 330am about all that Lady Gaga is or isn't and why sleep? Peace and quiet for adults and children should come second when talking about such important subjects. To all the business owners who close down loud confined spaces in the name of public harmony, thank you for your class and consideration. To Franklin Park, screw you and your booze burger tunnel.Franklin Park owners should open a shooting range, bungie jump or live music venue in your spacious outdoor area -
for the record, i'm with you about how much it must suck to live by FP.

I live right there, and it does get loud but it's not that bad. Then again, I go out a lot and every weekend night, so I'm not around most times when it is loud (at least the last two years--sans burger joint). When I am home, I (literally) hear the bartenders and bouncers getting the driveway cleared of patrons after 1am on school nights.
Bottom line, I moved into this area with the promise of it becoming what it is, and that's part of the reason I like it so much. Now gimme my root beer float that I can go get in my PJs. Life is grand.
...And that backyard BBQ idea is killer. Too bad the owner of 95S has no clue how to run a bar. -

It really sucks to be put out like that, but this sort of discussion is only going to become more common.

Every neighborhood that wants peace, security and services. Each plays upon the other- none occur in a vaccum. How our area continues to juggle these three issues is going to be interesting to watch. -

Franklin Park and Dutch Boy provide jobs, tax revenue and what I feel most important put a connectivity to the neighborhood. A place to go for people inside and from outside the area. Makes CH look good in the eyes of everybody. The owners of both are living and doing business by the age old "if it ain't broke don't fix it". The noise and noisy drunks that they baby sit and do a late night release need a small correction. Signs at most venues say "please be quiet and show consideration to our neighbors" The management are going to allow business flow to grow so noisy that when the correction comes it will be from the building dept as well as community leaders. The owners should take action before mandated by the city. The C of O violation is a hint of the trouble that will come from his hybrid burger shop and it's shared bathroom and common through ways to an establishment who primary product is booze without the food. Any and all complaints, building and safety issues should be looked at as one big business rather than 3 small ones. They want to share the bathroom when it suits them and the rest of us get more foot traffic from noisy drunks looking to nibble a midnight double cheese with bacon before reordering another Patron. I want a good burger as much as anybody but if more noise is the cost I will walk a few blocks for the avoidance.
