Bike shops in neighborhood with $100, $150 kid's bikes/

Subject: Bike shops in neighborhood with $100, $150 kid's bikes/

haven't bought a new child's bike in a long time and don't have much to spend. $150 would be tops (would like to spend less), any chance of getting anything like that around here or am i stuck with crap from toys r us and the like?

    Give a call to Pete at Ride Brooklyn on Bergen St. Bikes in that price range are usually the domain of toy stores, but if anyone can work with you, RB is the place.

    I guess it has been a long time since I bought a kid's bike, I just can't imagine spending $250 on a bike for a child under 10, I also don't have the money for that either. I just called around to a few stores and found that you are correct, nothing in my price range.

    yeah, I guess i am going to have to go that route, I was in dreamland thinking I could get him a better bike at a bike shop in my price range, thanks everyone!

    The bike shop on Vanderbilt (in PH) has about 8 used bikes they put out front with a sign that says "$100 each".

    ..I don't remember if any of them were kids bikes.

    If he is not gonna ride alot a Target bike will last till he outgrows it.

    There are lots of kids bikes on Craigslist for under $150.

    FWIW- the Target ones aren't totally shitty bikes- my old adult roomie got one from there and LOVES his- rides it all the time. Added benefit- if it ever gets stolen, he won't have lost much.

    the target ones are pretty much pieces of shit huffy or some like brand. just because your roomie loves his/her bike doesnt make it not a pos. you are better off going to a bike shop or craigslist imo.

    I have a couple of kids under ten and have to say Target, etc. are a great place for a "cheap" bike that will be more than adequate for a few years. The other place, dare I say it, is Park Slope Parents classifieds or similar. You can almost always find something on there that is in great working condition.

    The fact is, is that kids grow, and the bike will be useless in 2-3 very short years. And because my roomie likes his bike, it means that he's used as a commuter bike and has never had problems with it. So, I disagree- I see that as a positive.

    I have been told, by two different bike shop owners in different towns, that the bikes sold at places like Wal Mart and Target are not innately inferior, but just typically assembled (apparently usually done in store) by whoever is on staff. That leads to little steps not being done ideally. Both told me they made most of their money repairing bikes bought at those stores not on sales.

    If you go the Target route, you might end up with a perfectly fine bike (I'm guessing this kid isn't doing things like the Century ride) for a kid to use until outgrowing it. It's been a while but I had a cheap, supposedly crappy bike from Wal Mart as a kid and had no problems with it and I rode it a lot.

    ditto 1st streeter -- as well as stoop/yard sales and craigslist. it's a KID - it won't last more than 2 years no matter how good of a bike it is.

    Just for info, I have been scouring Craigslist and PSP classifieds to no avail, i am gonna cave and do Target or Walmart, thanks everybody

    Hmm, interesting link, though, I don't see any prices listed or if they have kid's bikes. Going to give one of the stores a call when they open, thanks

    I mighta gone there instead of Dixon's if I knew about them. I wanted a good used bike but I assumed everything on Crag's list was recently stolen.

    Do kids even know if its a "good" bike vs. a "crappy" bike? Get the kid a bike you can afford in a color he/she loves and you'll be a god. As long as its got two pedals, a chain, tires and handlebars a kid will love it.

    That is exactly what my kids wanted in a bike. My 9 year old twins were only looking a colors and trim.

    But as a parent and a consumer I wanted one that would not fall apart after one season.

    Exactly Ring! it's not just the kid who has to be happy here, LOL! I am just waiting for noon and then am going to call the shop on Avenue C, if they have any kid's bikes, you know who is going to go there and check it out. I hope they do, it sounds like a great place.

    I'd suggest buying them boxed and then taking them to a bike store for assembly. That's probably your best guard against them falling apart.

    That is what I am thinking of doing, not sure I trust hubby to do it, any idea what a bike store would charge?

    Just called both recycle a bike stores and neither of them have any kids bikes, it was a good idea though. Back to Walmart, thanks everyone

    Not sure if this helps you, but might help someone.

    Brooklyn Bicycles on 6th Ave/9th St has fliers in their windows about a fall sale. I think it was something like 10% bikes, and higher amounts off of gear and clothing.
