Moving/Storage Boxes

One of my bestest friends and her sig other are moving and got quoted $400 for regular cardboard moving boxes. That seems a bit out of line price wise - not to mention a bit wasteful. Does anyone have any recommendations on where the girls could get re-cycled moving boxes? Better priced boxes? Anyone have any they want to get rid of?

home depot has by far the cheapest boxes. even the 2 manhattan locations are cheaper than anywhere else.

I second home depot, boxes are around $1, various sizes.

I picked up almost 50 boxes by walking around on 2 -3 Sunday nights in the area that were put out for recycling. All from Fresh Direct and in great shape.

Also check craigslist and freecycle

Check with medical facilities near home if they've got a few weeks. They tend to have sturdy boxes without food spilled all over them.

When we lived off of Flatbush, I got most of our moving boxes from the dialysis place next to Blockbuster--every afternoon they put out a good stack of broken down, but tied together boxes. I just picked those up every day for a bit and had more than enough. Even our movers commented on the quality of the boxes (they had good handle holes.)

Also, liquor stores. Just go into a liquor store or medical place near home and ask what they have and when is best to pick them up. They may even hold them for you until you can pick them up.

Craigslist always has free moving boxes. And you get professional movers boxes all the same size, which is better than boxes of many different varieties

THANKS GANG! Hi ho, hi ho - its box scrounging we go. I really like the idea of liquor store boxes - I might even have to fill them first in order to get the whole re-cycle vibe really going.

yeah, my friend just moved using liquor boxes and it was perfect. they're smallish and carry-able, so none of them were overloaded and too heavy to carry up multiple flights of stairs.

I got boxes, tape, wrapping papers and bubble wrap from like boxes.com or something for cheap.

Just something to remember...be wary of boxes from food places...might bring in roaches. If you go to supermarket try to pick up boxes just as they are geared to be crushed or broken down. Look for dry goods packing boxes.
Best to pick up boxes as soon as they are tied and wrapped up.
If you are a member of the Food Coop you may hit a payload of boxes if you arrive when the deliveries are heaviest. Give them a call.
Also, buy yourself a great tape gun, sturdy and don't buy cheap tape (it sticks to itself) :roll:
