JFK to park slope (7th avenue) - public transport?
We have a couple of budget visitors coming to stay who would like to catch public transport if possible.
What is the best (and fastest) way to get to the 7th avenue subway stop from JFK airport.
Do you or do you know anyone who goes by public transport? Or is this such a hassle that its worth shelling out for a cab?nMany thanks

how many people?
a cab split 3 ways for example wouldn't cost much more than public transportation....
unless you take the bus to the subway but that hard to find if you are from out of town. -
it's $45 from jfk, $15 each for 3 people is totally worth the ease and convenience of getting here in 40 mins vs. hauling their luggage to the A train, crossing to the downtown platform at Jay St. and then taking the F. it would only cost $2.25 each but i would estimate taking about 90 mins.
-
Also keep in mind that the trains are an absolute cluster lately on the weekends (IE the F is a shuttle bus, I would imagine the A/C has some issues...) so if they're coming in Fri-Sun there's the potential for that added pain-in-the-ass/confusion factor

They can catch the Airtrain from JFK to Jamaica for five bucks. Then the LIRR from Jamaica to Flatbush/Atlantic for just over five bucks(I know it's between $5-$6 now). Then either walk to 7th Ave or pay the $2.25 for the Q or B to 7th.
-
If the F was actually running I would totally recommend the air train to the A to the F at Jay street. I did it in August and it was really easy. And somehow I got out of paying for the air train on the way back. Win.

Airtrain is free is you are coming from the airport. You only pay to go into the airport or if you board off aiport property.
-
It is? Huh! My sometimes drunk friend told me I snuck through when I was all happy to not have paid. Thanks for ruining my $5 for free ride dream!
-
Oh, in that case...
You totally got over on them. I can't believe you pulled that off you luck dog! =D>

It's only free within the airport...you pay the $5 when departing the airtrain system at Jamaica or Howard Beach. Same as you do when you arrive at those stations on the way to the airport. -
is there a shuttle option to park slope from jfk?
-
The Air Train is *not* free when leaving the Airport. It is $5 per person in either direction at Jamaica station. However if you are arriving on a weekend it's only $3.25 for a city ticket on the LIRR to Flatbush. So $8.25 to get to Flatbush and 4th ave, from there they can walk to 7th or take the Q, for another $2 each. (Say $10.25 per person) Or get a car service car for $7 or 8 (making it roughly $12 per person).
I couldn't imagine trying to take the A train the whole way that seems like it would add at least an hour to the trip. It's only about 20 minutes on the LIRR.
Yellow Cab fare to Park Slope is metered, it is not the flat $45 that you pay to or from Manhattan. Sometimes cabbies, knowing this, will take the belt parkway around brooklyn to bring the fare over $50 (esp. with passengers who don't know better). In general I think arranging a car service car is a better option. Areceibo tells you to call them when you touch down (keep the phone in your pocket) and then comes and picks you up, but call and ask them the price first. If it's anywhere near the $12 x 3 == $36 price I think it would be worth the extra money for the convenience, and not having to ride three different trains they may never have been on, paying with 2 different systems. -
There is a city bus, I believe the B15 though I could have the number wrong, that runs between one of the airport terminals and the last stop on the 3 train (New Lots). If it's not the terminal you arrive/depart at, you can take the airtrain loop that only runs inside the airport, which is free.
This is the only way I know of to do it for only the cost of a subway fare. It is extremely slow and tedious, and the bus is packed. -
I've done the F to the A to the Airtrain before. It isn't bad, especially when compared to public transportation to LGA from the slope. But bring a book...
