Anyone buy travel insurance? — Brooklynian

Anyone buy travel insurance?

So, in all my travels I never have. However, my fiance and I have spent a lot on our upcoming honeymoon and the travel agent is trying to sell it to us. I don't want it, but fiance figures since we're spending so much it might be a good idea- "what's another $200?" We have to sign a waiver if we don't want it, which kind of pisses me off as if I'm going to jinx myself if we don't. Please advise.

  • Make an educated decision - what time of year are you getting married? Where are you going on your honeymoon? If you are going to the Carribbean during the summer months there is a possibility there might be hurricanes. If you are going to Aruba at any time the likelihood of weather issues is nil.

If the potential issue is non-weather related - - i.e., if you have elderly family members and there is the potential of an illness in family, you may want to consider it.
  • If you used a credit card to pay - check with your credit card company, I know American Express' offers this.
  • Italy- First 2 weeks in November. No chance of weather related destruction and no family members about to kick the bucket.
  • That's true, Stace- I think we did pay it on Amex. Yea, I'm turning this down...rip off in my mind...
  • Good move. Take the $200 and buy something beautiful that will always remind you of your trip.
  • Amex pays for mine. I believe they charge an additional $5 to$20 per trip. Some crazy thing like that, you should check.
  • I'm curious, did you buy "full fare" or restricted tickets? If you bought full fare, even if they're economy, you can still get a refund.

Not sure- the travel agent did it all. I should check that too. While I was happy to go the travel agent route (she new the good places to stay) she pretty much put us aside after we gave her our CC info. Then once I picked up communication, she was about the insurance...so I have to give her this signed waiver before I can get my itinerary. It's kinda stupid.
  • She processed your card but won't give you the info until you sign the waiver? This doesn't sound right.
  • I know, right?!!? WFT?
  • I always, always buy travel insurance, and have made claims in the past. Be absolutely certain that your health insurance (if you're lucky enough to have it) covers you outside of the US. If you have an accident, like tripping over a cobblestone street and end up in an Italian hospital with a fractured anything, the cost will be astronomical and there is a very, very good chance they'll want cash. What happens if one of you lose your job and have to cancel the honeymoon? What if one of you gets hit by the B45 bus crossing the street. There are lots of things that can go wrong that can cause a delay or cancelation of your trip. What percentage of the total cost of the trip is the insurance premium? Can you afford to lose the money spent on the honeymoon?
  • I never ever buy travel insurance. Given how often I travel (international several times a year) and the number of times I've had a problem (zero) I figure I'll still be ahead if disaster strikes.

    Ditto.
