What type of birds are these...?
....am trying to get a picture, but no luck yet. My backyard has recently become a playground for these birds...They are on the small side, have a brown back with a V (or more like a V with wings (a la Van Halen)) and a pale yellow belly. I'm not sure that all of them have the V, and some seem to have a black mark on the side of their faces (like war paint).
I feel sorry for them because my cats already got one and yet they keep swooping down into my yard. I am supervising the cats outside, but last time it happened too quickly for me to stop.
Maybe I need a scarecrow. Where's Drunken Revival when I need him?

OMG - Little Killer (Gypsy) came home with two of the same type of babies in the last few days. I have her "belled" and tagged so she makes quite the racket even when she is trying to be stealthy. One of the neighbors said they might be baby orioles but I don't think so.
-
So I went to google and typed in "identify birds by color" - and this website popped up first: www.whatbird.com. It appears that what the little kittehs are bringing home may be Philadelphia Vireos. Look at the little birdie's picture and see if you agree.
-
Oh, that might be them. I actually took a picture of the one they caught/killed....although I am sure people don't want to see the dead bird pics.
I have Stella "belled" as well, but the birds keep coming into the yard...and onto the furniture, plants, etc.
There seem to be a lot of them in the past 2 weeks or so. There is a giant nest in the neighbor's yard, so maybe that's where they came from. -
it's migration time, and that description sounds like maybe some kind of warbler or a kinglet. kinglets are SUPER tiny, like flying golfballs, and would be pretty easy to catch -- they hop around and fly very low to the ground looking for insects. big flocks of them are common this time of year.
warblers are also small and can look like practically anything (says me, since i have trouble identifying them). here are a bunch: http://www.flickr.com/groups/fallwarblers/pool/ you may well be seeing more than one kind, which would account for variations in warpaint. -
Oh, hell, now I'm all confused. Yes, some might be warblers.
I don't think they are kinglets - they are small, but not super tiny.
They didn't seem to be around yesterday, so maybe they're on their way further south. -

heehee -- that is exactly what i sound like when watching warblers. -

I feel better now. Even the group is called "confusing fall warblers"

I am just waiting for the cat to bring home either a) a rottweiler or b) a day laborer. For a six pound kitteh, she has brought home some very large presents for momma. Babies and old Chinese lady bottle collectors have been offered and rejected.

^we need to see pictures of Gypsy, stat!
-
OK - now my 'tard comes out - how do I attach a photo on here? I have a photo of Gypsy sitting next to her big bro, Rocco saved in my documents - thats as far as I get. D-oye.
-
there are instructions on the Ask Brooklynian board.
-
if the instructions confuse you (too me a while to figure it out), email me the pic (I'm assuming you can do this!) to my screen name at gmail and I will post Gypsy and Rocco for you
-
Thanks Flexi! I tried to read thru and it was a no go. I THOUGHT I had a grasp of basic english but I guess I was wrong. just emailed to you - the two partners in crime on Nana's back porch.
-
ok, gimme a few minutes and I'll get them posted.
OMG! I could die from the cute. I just saw them. -
I love how this pic is titled "Rocco and Killer"

You have to introduce Rocco to Beaverhausen's Oscar
-
trying to make it bigger....whoa! super-sized! click to see full pic
-
THANKS! They are the babies! Am in the process of getting Rocco a sister or brother through greyhound rescue. He has not been the same since he lost his spotty sister in February and though Gypsy is tolerant of his big slurpies and clumsy cuddles, she gets to the point of ENOUGH and saunters off. Rocks is ready for another big doggy in his life now.
-
They are adorable! I am sure that Gypsy will keep your new dog in line as well :-)

Rocco and Oscar Play DATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ASAP!!!!!!
-
We are working on the socialization skills - Rocks is a good dog and VERY friendly. He plays well with ALL dogs. He is so eager to please and play that he tolerates anything! Some border collie mix really nipped his jowls/face and despite the bleeding, Rocks was "OK, that's out of the way, you da man, now lets play."
Our biggest problem is once he is off leash, he bolts and does not listen to momma. AT ALL. Will run out of the dog run. So our play dates are limited to backyard playdates. Nana has a big one in Bay Ridge! Does Oscar? -
No, Oscar has no yard. He's a dog without a yard. It's all very sad. He's not a runner, though. BUT - Owlshead has a dog run! Oscar would be very willing to show Rocco the ropes!
-
We have been to Owls Head as well as Dyker Park.
Dyker was a no go due to some jerk with a wolf hybrid that appeared to have worms (or something else just as nasty).
Owls Head was fun (his friends Madison and Emma play there every day) but after two heart-stopping escapes (the one where he ALMOST made it onto the Belt Parkway entrance was the final one), we stopped.
Nana lives three blocks up from the Owls Head run so his friends Emma and Madison come and play in Nana's backyard when we visit Nana.
Oscar can come and play too! -
Yeah, I think we talked about the dick with the hybrid before. He's made the rounds to all the runs and been shown the door - his dog is a mess, poor thing, and he allows it to be a menace.
-
Send Oskie to Nana's house for the play date in the yard and take pics!
-
Oscar can't drive yet.
-
I heard that Toonces has a driving school for cats and those few dogs that can handle a cat driving instructor.
Howdy, Stranger!
