Cop cars at Prospect and Classon — Brooklynian

Cop cars at Prospect and Classon

Anyone know what is going on outside Prospect between Classon and Grand? There are cop cars everywhere and they have the street blocked off and are questioning/interviewing people?

Thanks.

  • There was a fatal shooting at about 5 this morning. I heard the two shots, then a little police activity, then at 5:45 a woman wailing loudly. Really awful. Not a murder on this block in the last 7 years.
  • just had the police knocking at my door... indeed a homicide.
  • was the victim someone from that block? if so, do you know who?
  • anymore info?
  • Apparently (from what heard from neighbors who spoke to the police), he lived down kind of in the middle of the block. I was told it was two shots while the guys was parking. Kind of crazy, I live right across the street from it. Had to walk under the police tape to get to work. Looks like they will be there for a bit to get the investigation done and body taken away.
  • I live on the corner of Classon...heard the big "boom" shots around 5am. I spoke to people that I know who were gathered on the corner. Apparently, a guy who lived on that block (they call him Red- we believe he's in his late 30's or early 40s)...I would often see him in passing and he always said good morning and greeted my daughter. Red was fatally shot in his car while parking and his friends believe he was robbed...also word has it that this could be drug related.
  • 5:25Am the two shots woke us up from a deep sleep, looked out the window and saw the car parked across the street with its lights on but no activity at all. then all the police showed up. never got back to sleep, very scary!
  • My husband was parking the car this morning and heard it. We have a parking space right on the corner of Prospect Place and Classon. He said he never walked so fast in his life back to the apartment. He did not see anything though - just heard the two shots. So sad and too close for comfort.
  • A second shooting in less than 48 hours in the Prospect and Lefferts Garden area!

This is completely awful. I think community leaders need to do a press conference super-quick about what's going on in their neighborhoods and demand some action from our elected officials. What're you going to do, Sen. Adams? What're you going to do Councilman Eugene?

    Sigh.

Looks like I need to get myself in action as well. Get on the phone, get on some letter writing, get to some community board meetings. It's easy to get upset, but it's better to get up and do something.

Pardon my venting. I'm just very upset about this.
  • Oh my god. I also walked past the police tape outside of my door this morning. I can't believe this happened on our block. It's so sad and very terrifying!
  • Subject: Agreed, let's do something about it

I heard these gun shots too this morning, so upsetting. When is the community board meeting? If anyone can post specific information about how to get involved & who to contact , it would be helpful.
  • I'd be interested in attending a Community Board meeting too. It really is sad that this happened on my block.

Was he tall, thin, light-skinned black dude? Thin dreads? Has a son? I really hope this isn't my friend....
  • He does have children. More like 5'9' , medium to light complextion & drove a maroon 4- door car (which I think was at the scene). Always had his blue-tooth ear piece on. Hair shaved close...always drinking coffee in the morning and congregating on the corner (at the Classon Bodega) with neighborhood folks & some recovering addicts. Would often wash his car in front of the brownstone where he lived. But- nonetheless, always respectful, friendly and loved talking to children. He went by the name "Red". Everyone is very saddened by this. His family and friends are in my thoughts and prayers.
  • Ok- the Daily News has a pic- its not my friend (thankfully), but this is tragic. It's horrible when you lose one of the good ones in the nabe.
  • This is terrifying.
  • The guy was a "Loan Shark".
  • ^^^ given that, I think that it's safe to say that this shooting, like the vast majority of shootings, was not random.
  • Ok- not random and maybe he wasn't a saint (phe- who is???)- but, to live here, you do need to justify and resolve this public act of violence so that you can convince yourself you'll be ok.

Oh yea, there was that case of mistaken identity the other day....he died....

It's NOT ok. I'm moving. Fuck this.
  • Okay, yeah, it was public, but that doesn't override the fact that it wasn't random - it was targeted at an individual who chose to engage in risky activity... unless you don't count unregulated lending of money, at (presumably) absurdly high interest rates, to people not deemed worthy of credit by established institutions and, therefor, probably a little more desperate... oh, and being known to regularly carry large amounts of cash at any given moment to support said lending...

I think that I can avoid situations like that.

Well, I don't think you can avoid being caught in the cross fire though. From what I recall, you work in an environment that could possibly put you in the line of fire, correct? So, really, you can only avoid it to the best of your ability, but fact is you could get caught in the middle one day. We all could.
  • we could all get hit by a bus too. so move out.
  • There's an annual act of violence near the Alma Realty complex.

2007, there was a slashing in front of 475 St Marks (that my old roommate was the first on the scene for)

2008, there was a carjacking and shootout with the cops that ended w/a dead perp on the corner of Bergen + Classon.

    2009, it's this.

Hello, welcome to the ghetto. If you moved to the Middle East, it would be kind of goofy to be surprised or shocked by violence in an area that's been war torn for thousands of years.

Not to say it's right or justified, but it is what it is. You had a methadone clinic around the corner, and a few blocks down you have a major drug + crime conduit (Nostrand). This neighborhood is HOOD.
  • No not really.
  • People- if you're all talking to me, don't worry, I'll be outta here soon enough. I've lived here longer than many of you here, so PLEASE- don't tell me where I live and what its like. Many of you have no IDEA what this place was like back when NONE of you wanted to live here.

No shit, it's hood. I'm just sick of it now. Waited too long for things to get better.
  • I'm curious to know, as someone who's also lived here a long time, what tipped you over the edge and made you decide to leave now?

My impending marriage to a man who has 4 quickly growing boys part-time. NO space! There are people on this board that have been to my apartment and they know how big my place is (4 bedroom/ 2 bath). It's still not enough. Also, I only let them go out to play under very careful circumstances. Winter months suck because no one wants to go out.

But- overall- I'm sick of the grind- it's a hard life living in the city if you don't make a mil. And I want to live in other places. I'm from here, so I'm ready to experience what life is like on the "outside."
