BIKE STOLEN outside the Food Coop this afternoon — Brooklynian

BIKE STOLEN outside the Food Coop this afternoon

Soooooo bummed. Not my bike, but if someone tries to sell it to you, get their number please and pm me!
My Bianchi Pista (2005) was stolen from outside the Park Slope Food Coop on Wednesday, October 14, 2009 between 1 and 4 pm.

Defining features include and Easton seat post, upright handle bars with red grips. Front brake on the right. Flip/flop hub. Stock wheel and tire on the front, newer wheel on back with Continental tire. The frame has a little wrinkle under the seat post from having to pry out an old stuck seat post. Frame has a bunch of scratches. I think the gear ratio was 48/14.

Thanks for your help
:(

Around the Coop is a total high theft area btw. There is a security camera (which is being accessed) but that doesn't really help you much after the fact. Use two locks in the future and hope to live in a world someday where people keep their hands off other people's beloved transportation...

  • that sucks, I hate to hear about bikes getting stolen. let us know how it was done, how was it locked up? My bike was there all morning.
  • Lock was cut, I don't know the details.

The other bit of info we learned, a nascent effort to start a NYC Bikewatch

    :(
the handle bars are different than this one. other details above.
  • Give cops the video tape. You'd be surprised at what they can find in poor quality footage.
  • Why doesn't the coop offer a bike babysitter - you lock the bike on a rack, get a ticket put on the bike and you get the same number on a card...when done shopping you turn in that number and get your bike. like a bag check at a store?

probably because providing a bike rack does not assume responsibility for the safekeeping of your bike. it is the responsibility of the owner to properly lock up their bike. like a swim at your own risk.

as much as i hate to say it if this bike was stolen between 1-4pm it was most likely not properly locked up or locked up with a shit lock.
  • The Coop has been experimenting with valet/guarded bike parking, but so far I think it is only one afternoon on weekends. If in fact it is still happening, haven't heard much about it since the summer.

Yeah, there's been a bike valet service on Saturday afternoons, when the permanent racks get full. It'd be great if that could happen full time.

If you need a reminder about doing the double lock thing, here it is. I guess we all do stuff that we know better not to do...

  • cool video! my bike was stolen from there last year. my fault; and i double lock now.
  • Hey I'm not going to repeat the story where I sideswipped a bike thief with my car. ( He stole a bike from near the coop), and I know this is a high bike theft area, but what if we petition the garage to make a bike parking area. - alas with a charge perhaps, but I would gladly pay $3.00 -5 dollars to park the bike safely (vs. losing the $1000 my bike cost me.) What do you think? prevention beats follow-up action 99% of the time.. PLEASE no offense bikewatch. Anything we can do to battle crime is okay with me.
  • We have those people in orange vests waiting outside to walk people with their groceries. Perhaps they should keep an eye on the bike racks as well. Having your lock cut in the middle of the day in front to the coop is unacceptable.

I think most, if not all, garages won't go for this. Most spots aren't permanent (ie they moved the vehicles around as need be) and they don't want to be responsible for something so easily stolen/damaged.

I know a company that tried to buy spots so employees could bike to work since bikes weren't allowed in the building and no amount of money would persuade any garage in the vicinity to let them do this.
  • what I've learned so far about what to do when your bike is stolen

    1) call the cops, file a report, and make sure the full value of the bike is noted.
If it was an expensive bike don't let them write it down as a $100 bike, which would turn a felony into a misdemeanor (guessing at those $ figures)

It may seem like a waste of time, but if stolen bikes never get added to the precinct's CompStat records, the cops will never do anything about it.

    2) get photos, get security camera footage

    3) write a blog post, visit your neighborhood message board, send info to http://bikewatchnyc.wordpress.com/

    4) tweet @bikewatchNYC, @BicycleHabitat & #BikeNYC

    5) send flyers to bike shops

    6) hope & 'workit'

    7) watch Hal's video and lock your next bike up better

Most of these tips are good for other robbery scenarios too.
