500 Sterling Place Demolition — Brooklynian

500 Sterling Place Demolition

I live on St. John's and about a week ago I woke up to the pleasant sound of construction. The lot has been an empty basement for about 3 years, and all they seem to be doing is filling it. I checked with nyc.gov and there's a stop work order for this site from March. Anyone have experience with these things? Are they simply filling it in so we can have a Community Garden, or would that be too good to be true :D

  • It is usually a public safety issue. They will still maintain the fence so it does not turn into a dumping ground. Did anybody fall in? Usually an insurance company will ask them to back fill it. These holes are all over NYC.
  • It won't be a community garden. Rumor has it that while the developer had a permit for a five story building, he wanted to build twelve, then couldn't get finance and stopped work. The city is requiring the hole to be filled in as a safety measure. The site will continue to be fenced. I know that another developer has expressed interest in the site, but the owner can't/won't be found. My expectation is that the site will be filled in, they may lay sod, but there will be a chain link or plywood fence around the site for the foreseeable future.
