HVAC heating unit won't shut off
Subject: HVAC heating unit won't shut off
My heat in my new condo was finally turned on yesterday. The HVAC Unit in my bedroom has this knob on the side that goes from a picture of a fan (the lowest setting) to the number 6. I turned it all the way down to the fan setting yesterday around 6pm. As of this morning, 7:30, the unit is still hot and is throwing off a lot of heat. I have a call in to the management company and they are trying to get a plumber out today. In the meantime, does anyone have experience with this? I wonder if it is dangerous. I am at work now worrying about it. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.Comments

it sounds risky
but here's some things you can do in an arid situation in the mean time
1. start that dried herb kit
2. make fruit leather or beef jerky
3. air dry all sweaters and hand washables
4. paint the bathroom
5. ponder a cactus collection
be warned
do not work with filo dough -
7. try circuit breaker.

8. Open window. (mine is for the entire heating season)

It this unit in your bedroom just a part of the central heating/cooling? It sounds like it is, if you only have fan control at that panel. Go to the central panel and see if you can turn down the target temperature.

I won't be opening any windows, I am paying for my own heat now. There are 2 units in the apartment, one in the front that controls both the ac and heat, and the settings are only off, low, medium and high. In my bedroom, there is a radiator type thing on the wall. The settings are from fan, 1 up to the number 6. The bedroom unit is set on the fan setting and it is SO hot. This appears to be the lowest setting. Unfortunately, there is no thermostat at all in the unit to control the overall temperature. I will have to get a plumber of my own in to see if a thermostat can be placed. Thanks for all the feedback and keep it coming!

theory: The main unit is supposed to tell the little unit when it is supposed to turn on and off based on whether it decides it is hot or cold.
The main unit's decision making ability (aka thermostat) is intact, hence it successfully turns on and off. However, the little unit has developed the ability to longer listen to the main unit ...hence it continues to put out heat.
So, the little unit could have gained this freedom to defy as a result of a bad connection between the units. Or, perhaps the switch in the little unit that is supposed to trip when the big unit tells it too is kaput.
Lastly, adolescence could be to blame. -
Yeah, it could be something like a bad connection between the main/little unit. On the first day we ran our heat last year (steam heat, from boiler), we couldn't turn it off. Eventually figured out that someone had severed the wire between boiler/thermostat while doing work in our basement.

They are ordering a new knob for it, this controls the intensity of the heat. They will shut off all the heat tomorrow since the forecast looks good for the next week, at least until they install the new knob. All that heat running for days and all I can think of is $$$$$...... such is the life of a new condo owner. Thanks for the feedback.
