Our co-op needs to replace its boiler.
Has anyone had any experiences with Plumber’s Shop and Associates on Flatbush? They have the best quote, but the least information!

  • Hello,
When we did it several years ago in our building, we used the company called Control Combustion. Don't have their phone number but I'm sure you can find them. They did a good job.
  • Try John Hlald... the very best. If you can't google it.. pm me.
  • I agree about Hlad, he is a Grade A plumber, but only if you're replacing your old boiler with a gas boiler. However, if you're going oil you may want to consider Castle Oil in the Bronx. I don't believe John Hlad installs oil burners.
  • I've used John Hlad for almost 30 years. He's excellent. Not inexpensive, but he and his guys do great work, and come very quickly after I ask them to.
  • You can also go to servicemagic.com. Although I believe in personal referrals first, if you hit a brick wall this is a decent option.
  • The lowest bid isn't necessarily the best bid. I went through this process for my coop about two years ago. Get multiple bids. At least three. Call references.

We got bids from Gateway Plumbing, A Real Good Plumber, and All Mechanical Plumbing and Heating. I found them on a web site called heatinghelp.com here: http://www.heatinghelp.com/find-a-professional/NY/Brooklyn

We ended up selecting ARGP. They were not the lowest bid. We are happy with the boiler install. We also talked to them about a problem we had getting heat to the top floor and they fixed that problem by increasing the venting of the steam mains.

I recommend, if you have time, to explore the heatinghelp web site. There is a link for asking questions. If you find the section called "strictly steam" you can post questions about how to go about selecting a steam professional to do a boiler install.

    Good luck.

I second this recommendation. I've used them for other plumbing work, such as fixing a steam pipe under my floor, installation of a new hot water tank, and installing fixtures/sink/toilet for a bathroom renovation. They do fine work.
  • Subject: CAUTION!

We used Henry Noel on a job. He is nice but his documentation and explanations were poor. We ended up having problems with his work and then needed to have another plumber come in and fix his work! I believe the lesson learned is you pay for what you get. If you go cheap you end up getting cheap work.
  • Well now that thread has been resurrected... Go with John Hllad!
