Swineflu shot, should you or not?

H1N1 vaccine hysteria is as retarded as H1N1 hysteria.

EVERYBODY FREAK OUT! WAVE YOUR HANDS AND RUN IN A CIRCLE AND SCREAM! BLOW UP THE HOSPITAL! ASSASSINATE THE PRESIDENT! MESS YOUR PANTS! GO GO TERROR SCREAM RUN AAAAAAAAH!
That's what you want, right? I mean, if you really want to overreact to the random whims of the universe, by all means, don't let me stop you.
I feel for the gal in that news story, but this qualifies as "Act of God" levels of chance. Rather than blaming the vaccine, I think a smarter course of action to take is to resign yourself to the fact that sometimes, no matter how well you plan, no matter what good decisions you make, life will bitch slap you. Accept, let go, and move on.
Of course, with the Swine Flu (no, I will not be kosher/halal about it), even if you don't get the vaccine, and you do catch the disease, probably all that will happen is that you get the sniffles and stay in bed for a few days. Maybe it'll kill you (maybe if you're a kid or an old person or a pregnant woman).
So, y'know, whatever course of action you take, remember: BE AFRAID OF EVERYTHING. -
"LOCK YOU DOORS!!"

Remember when they sprayed pesticides all summer long? Remember being told to close your windows for a few hours while the trucks came by?!?!? Ummm, last time I checked, we still had mosquitoes....
Fucking people.
Oh yea, no- I'm not getting the "vaccine." -

Meh...I can't seem to find one to save my life for me or my kid, so it's sort of a moot point.

My work has someone come into our office to give out flu vaccinations every year and I get one because it's easy and free. This year's shot will not include a vaccine for H1N1 and I'm not going to any effort to get one. That said, it's been a long time since I've had the flu.

i think i may have already had the hiney flu last spring, and if that was it, then lemme tell you, you don't want it. my lungs fell to pieces more than usual, but the gf's did, too, and she doesn't ordinarily have asthma. no, we didn't die, but i would go to some trouble to have avoided that experience.
i'm not sure that was it -- we were sick before it got here, but we were so sick for so long and with such matching symptoms that i think we may have really had two consecutive viruses. since my lungs are less than perfect, i will get both flu vaccines as soon as they're available. my doctor has neither, though i found a city clinic that i hope will give me the regular shot, since i'm in a high-risk group.
i know h1n1 isn't supposed to be all that dangerous, but i teach college, and my students are already dropping like flies. it's noticeably earlier in the semester than usual for them to be this sick. i'm annoyed that, according to 311 today, nyc won't have vaccines until november. my friends in other areas are all talking about getting them already. -
I already had it.
...It effects everyone differently, but I slept 18 hours a day for about 4 days, and had some aches.
no vomiting. no hysteria. Life goes on. -
^how do you know that was H1N1 and not the regular flu?
-
the MD told me he was 99% sure, and that if it got worse to come in again.
I came in on day 3 of my four day sleepfest -

If you are just looking for the regular flu shot I got one at the Walgreens on Atlantic & 3rd about two weeks ago and the pharmacist said that they had a lot left -
Got this from my friend whose mom works in a hospital:
My mom works at a hospital and just sent me this to help everyone....
H1N1 basic info (AO)
Dr.Vinay Goyal is an MBBS,DRM,DNB (Intensivist and Thyroid specialist), having clinical experience of over 20 years. He has worked in institutions like Hinduja Hospital, Bombay Hospital, Saifee Hospital, Tata Memorial, etc. Presently, he is heading our Nuclear Medicine Department and Thyroid clinic at Riddhivinayak Cardiac and Critical Centre, Malad (W).
The following message given by him; I feel it makes a lot of sense and is important for all to know. The only portals of entry are the nostrils and mouth/throat. In a global epidemic of this nature, it's almost impossible not coming into contact with H1N1 in spite of all precautions. Contact with H1N1 is not so much of a problem as proliferation is.
While you are still healthy and not showing any symptoms of H1N1 infection, in order to prevent proliferation, aggravation of symptoms and development of secondary infections, some very simple steps, not fully highlighted in most official communications, can be practiced (instead of focusing on how to stock N95 or Tamiflu):
1. Frequent hand-washing (well highlighted in all official communications).
2. "Hands-off-the-face" approach. Resist all temptations to touch any
part of face (unless you want to eat, bathe or slap).
3. *Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine if you don't
trust salt). *H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the
throat/nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected one. Don't underestimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative method.
4. Similar to 3 above, *clean your nostrils at least once every day with
warm salt water. *Not everybody may be good at using a Neti pot,
but *blowing the nose hard once a day (not too hard, and only one nostril at a time) and swabbing both nostrils with cotton swabs dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population.*
5. *Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C.
*If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption.
6. *Drink as much of warm liquids (tea, coffee, etc) as you can. *Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm.
There is another immunity booster - half a lemon, tablespoon of honey, couple of shakes of hot sauce (I like Texas Pete), hot water to melt honey and mix the lemon and TP, add ice to taste if you wish, or drink warm. Sip, Sip, Sip.
Suggest you pass this on to your entire E-List; you never know who might pay attention to it - and STAY ALIVE because of it. -
Well #1 and#2 seem like good advice at least. The other stuff is dubious, but probably not harmful.
-
i could have a higher chance of dying from car accident than from h1n1
. -
2. "Hands-off-the-face" approach. Resist all temptations to touch any
i wish this had been posted yesterday. then when that bitch came out of nowhere and cut me off on my way to the register at the supermarket, and then turned around when i called her on it and looked me dead in the eye and proceeded to put all of her stuff down on the counter anyway, i could have backhanded her like i wanted to and said i was following doctor's orders.
