TONY HAS HELPED MAKE SOMETHING OUT OF FRANKLIN AND BEYOND...HE HAS PUT PEOPLE, LIKE MYSELF IN A HOUSE, AND CARED FOR MANY UNFORTUNATE PEOPLE...
NOT ONLY THAT, BUT HIS CORNER MARKET IS A LANDMARK AND HAS BEEN SERVING THE COMMUNITY FOR EVER SINCE I CAN REMEMBER. -
why are you shouting?
I agree with your points, though -- I really like Tony. He was the first person in Brooklyn to talk to me after I first moved here all alone. Very friendly and helpful - and if he is out of something I want he first calls the other store to see if he can get it for me right then and there or else orders it for later.
I will be there this weekend to check it out! -
He does the same for me. I can't tell you how many cold wintery nights were made a little brighter last year when I stopped in his store.
I will be supporting his business without a doubt. -
x and A you both should check out craigslist or harmony. The stain job is excellent on the doors. Every establishment should not ask me for money from their esteemed past but for the service and value they provide on the day I am spending the money. Other places in the area have opened their doors with a smile, Sepia,Half Court,Tom's Teddy's, BCH,Glass Shop,Lili and Fig, Wash Comm, Pros Pond,Spice is Right and Jamrock, Bristens all have 1 thing in common, good products and nice people serving you for the most part. If Tony plans to reinvent himself as the nabe's nice guy I for one welcome it. Buying a cup of joe because he has a nice family is a stretch.
-
According to Tony's (twitter page), he is having his "Friends and Family soft opening" on saturday 6-9 pm. :P

Will the Coffee Wars of 2009 ever end?

Neighborhood coffee wars are better than shootings.

maybe the idea is that people who don't want to take sides, when they buy coffee at one place, they'll immediately go buy a cup at the other place as to avoid any appearance or feeling of partiality. genius. -
The pulp and the bean has awesome coffee! the best in the area no doubt! delish sweets, drinks etc! when I went to their grand opening, the borough president stopped by. The pulp and the bean is a big deal!!

Cool. Good to hear about more coffee in the neighborhood. I'll definitely be checking it out. Hopefully it's as tasty as breukelen which is also new. Thanks to all for opening these new and needed businesses.
-
the pulp and the bean had an amazing special opening today, If you were there you would be able to feel it...this place is going to be a big.
-
Well I wasn't there but I will be. Mosleem, your post sounds an awful lot like franklinave66's. You sure you're two different people?
-
talked with Tony last night and tonight and got to taste some coffee drinks both nights as well -- they open for real tomorrow (Sunday) with different coffee drinks, smoothies, bagels, and pastries.
-
Just stopped in and grabbed a coffee and muffin. Both are delicious and I'm enjoying them right now.
The girl that served me was really nice and Tony has a picture hanging in there of Franklin Ave from way back in the day that is alone worth stopping in to check out.
It's so nice to have this in the neighborhood! -
I love that photo, totally forgot to mention it. It's from 1910 and shows Franklin Avenue looking north from Eastern Parkway. Very cool to see.
-
the question is, is it better than Tony's standard, Connecticut Muffin?
-
Tony's place has pretty great coffee, great pastries, fresh bagels, and a very friendly and helpful staff. Sadly, my wife and I missed the special Saturday night event, but I was there bright and early Sunday morning and was quite happy with my breakfast!

Yes. Pastry selection is really good and lots of bagels.CM is good but this place is a little better. I hope Tony learns his lesson from the other good places, learn to order just enough so that the breads are not 3 or 4 days old by the time they sell out. -
Subject: Pulp & Bean a great addition to Franklin Av.
Had to miss the grand opening on Saturday night, but stopped by Monday for a cup of coffee. Never had Gillies Coffee before--it was delicious.
Unfortunately, I wasn't hungry when I stopped in, but I had to ask where the pastries came from because they looked scrumptious.
Tony has put in a ton of effort and has done a beautiful job on the shop. I plan to lend my support when I can! -
Why arent these posts being deleted for shilling? They are obviously him or friends with a financial interest.
-
I can't speak for anyone else, but I have no financial interest in Pulp & Bean. Just want to see businesses in our neighborhood do well and I appreciate the efforts of Tony and other new business owners trying to improve Franklin Av.
-
Um, also the owner is freaking crazy. Did you see the post about the "mole" in his coffee shop. schizophrenic much?
-
prospectheightsyo,
You're assuming waaaay too much. Last time I checked, I defintiely was not Tony. Nor do I consider myself a very close friend of his. Nor do I have any vested interest in his businesses. I do live around the corner from Fishers (and now the coffee shop) and as such my wife and I both often stop by Fishers to pick this or that up. 5 years of that has certainly led to an amicable relationship with the local grocery store manager/owner.
Tony has never been crazy in my dealings with him, he's a very friendly guy. While I agree that he didn't really come off that way with that mole post (a definite over-reaction), I don't consider that post the norm with him. Perhaps that's why people have been so willing and able to post complimentary reviews here, because Tony is a nice guy and has been a contributing member of the neighborhood for a very long time.
All things being equal, if Tony's new endeavor served crappy coffee and stale pastries, I wouldn't have posted a good review here, whether I like the guy or not. I don't see why my posts should be deleted for "shilling". After all, it's all about the quality of products and services offered. -

Same here. It's so good to see a nice positive thread as well. -
