general bitching about American wastefulness
when i came to this country i was amazed people wasting food to crave those pumpkins!!!
besides that throwing away not yet spoil food base on expiration dates(yes they are accurate but also most foods last longer than they say).
besides the asinine extra wrapped foods
restaurants have to get rid of slightly dint cans.
the biggest hypocrisy i can see is asking third world countries like china and india which by per capita uses like what 1/8 or something like that less than each person here or Europe to lower their carbon foot print to the same as american and European notional levels. even though they have alot more people. just insane!

I hate seeing food being abandoned by people who ordered it at restaurants. All I ask for is that everyone who eats in restaurants please takes home any food they do not finish. Request doggie bags! Save everyone else from eating your leftover pasta, bread, and soup!
If you really want to see excessive waste go to a catering hall during a wedding reception. :pukel: -
talk about restaurants and supermarket, they can't even give away the food that they have, insurance liability etc....

Actually, most states (including NY) have laws that allow such places to give away their food without fear of being sued.

As a result, places like City Harvest exist. http://www.cityharvest.org/
...but, yes, we are a wasteful country. ...and many places are too lazy to save their food for City Harvest because the 4 HP garbage disposal is so much easier and faster than waiting for a truck to pick it up. -

I think most restaurants (except at the really fancy Michelin type places) tend to serve disgustingly large portions. I wish they would either cut them down or offer size options. Once I know what a place serves I can at least ask them to leave out the stuff I don't want.
I miss living with a real yard where all the leftovers and scraps just got tossed in a compost pile in a distant corner of the yard. Yard waste like leaves and sticks also went in the piles. The fun part was that while decaying, the piles are warm and my box turtles would hang out in them in the winter--a warm buffet of worms and leftovers. -
About those pumpkins:
The Prospect Heights Community Farm (community garden on st. marks between vandy and underhill) is holding its annual Pumpkin Smash on Saturday, November 7th.
Bring your old jack o' lanterns and have a good time smashing them up. They'll go in our compost pile (instead of your trash) and provide nutrients for next year's gardens.
We are also asking folks to bring bags of leaves raked up from your yards, tree pits, etc. The city isn't doing compost leaf collection this year, so a coalition of community gardens is accepting them. We'll use them as "browns" for our compost pile.
Composting is a great way to reduce household waste. (Some cities even have regular compost collection, same as garbage.) Our garden also takes compost contributions from the PH CSA and from local businesses -- Sit & Wonder's coffee grounds, for instance, and sawdust from a local carpenter (who uses untreated wood). If you'd like to be part of our compost team, pm me and I'll put you in touch with the right folks.
