Good Luck El Jalapeno!
I hope you have better luck (and better prices, ambiance, management, etc, etc) than Delicious on the Slope.

That's nice of you... but I can't get my hopes up - it's a terrible spot for anything!
-
i was stunned when delicious went in. in all the times rushing to the subway, i never saw one person stop there. hard to make it on side streets and second flooors.
maybe they should start handing out free taster margaritas to get people in.. -
I heart El Jalapeno.
We had dinner there tonight and were the only diners but someone else got take out. Chips and salsa and guac were tasty. No liquor license yet so only a few sodas to drink.
I got chicken fajitas that were the best I've had since moving north. The meat was great quality and seasoned well and they weren't oily like lots of places. It came with guac and some tasty pico de gallo.
OKing had chile relleno. He said it was fine but not spectacular, similar to Rachel's on 5th. -
Yeah!
When you say *moving north*...is it Tex-Mex or ? -
Um, I'm no good at really telling this anymore. I'd say it's not like Lobo (which I think is terrible) if that's a local tex-mex place. I guess what we had was pretty similar to Rachel's except that my fajitas were far better.

What is up with the burgers on the menu? Kind of made me wonder about this place, but I have not tried it yet.

Maybe for kids?
I walked by this place a few nights ago and there was a guy out front in a sombrero handing out menus. "You like Mexican food?" he asked me as I passed by. I felt bad for him as I know that spot sucks for business. Glad to hear the food is good. Will have to give it a shot now. -
Since so many adults seem to want burgers, that sounds like a clever business move. Me, I want cheap fish tacos...
-
i got a take-out chicken enchilada last friday evening.. i was the only person in there, but it was early.. and the guy behind the counter was hearing a big ol' cowboy hat.. maybe that's his schtick. anyway, the 'lada was deelish.. sweeter-teasting than what i've gotten used to eating.. and i'll deinitely be back.
ya gotta help the underdog. -
Good luck to them as well. You don't want anyone not to succeed, especially a neighborhood small business owner. Good to hear the food seems to measure up. Nothing wrong with GOOD tex-mex. It all doesn't have to be cabeza, lengua, y huevos.

Every day the man in the sombero comes out around 5. It's full on mexican garb!

I have to see this.
I have a friend who was really sick with a high fever. She lived in Chelsea. She went to bed with a 104 fever. In the middle of the night she woke up because she heard noise. She looked out the window and saw her entire street filled with mariachis. She didn't have the energy to do anything and thought "whoa. that's really messed up" and went back to bed.
Turns out they were filming a movie on her street :-) -
I think this place is great. I've had take out once and dined in once, everything was really tasty and fresh. It's definitely Tex/Mex or Cal/Mex - and in a quite authentic way (which I say as someone who grew up in East LA). The owner is really sweet and I hope he succeeds. No liquor license, on a side street, and an awkward space, but hopefully people find and support this place. Prices seem a bit high but servings are nice size and come with modest sides.
As for hamburger on the menu - not an uncommon item to see on menus in Mexico, especially in the big chain coffee/shops or diners like VIPS. -
After going last Saturday night, I concur with the good reviews (though my friend I were the only people in the place--granted, it was pouring rain). The guy with the sombrero was effusive, the decor was suburban-kitschy charming, and the food was hearty and satisfying. I thought it was definitely a step up from Pollitos, La Taqueria, and most of the other middling Mexican places around. If I lived closer by, I'd probably be a regular.

Oddly enough, it was the same with Delicious on the Slope. Is there a chapter in Food Service Industry for Dummies that says "when you have the world's worst location, charge more?" -
Do they have a bar/ decent happy hour? Seems to be a prerequisite for success these days- in my book, at least.

I see now there's no liquor license. -
got some salsa (okay a lot of salsa to go with our homemade dip) and gauc and chips delivered the other night. The guac that night was really good and everything else tasted fresh and good, but the prices on the ticket were all higher than on the menu I had
I didn't want to argue with the poor delivery guy over a few bucks, but next time I'll get the price on the phone.
Howdy, Stranger!
