good place for eye exam in Slope? — Brooklynian

good place for eye exam in Slope?

I know there are tons of places, I want one that will give me an exam, not charge me a fortune and fill a prescription easily, nicely and cheaply.

I am not foreseeing needing expensive glasses, I am at that age where I probably need some reading glasses and to see things close up, so, nothing major. I also have my own frames that I recently bought, so, a place that will put the script in the frames I bring them without making me feel stupid cheap or guilty about not buying over priced frames from them. Thanks

  • Urban Optical for the exam (7th Ave/9th St). They have frames at many different price points. I know Costco does frames as well, and other people can probably recommend some cheap options
  • Not sure of the price without medical insurance, but Prospect vision, on Prospect Park West and 16th. They do a thorough eye exam.

Thanks flexi, I already have frames, got a great deal on some online, will check out Urban optical.

I will never go back to this place for an RX they wanted over $200 to fill my RX WITH my insurance. My old optician in the East Village, Manhattan Eyeworks, filled it for $120. I do have a friend that goes to Park West's Optometrist and has been happy though

That said you should check out Costco, the price of a membership plus the RX is cheaper by far than what most places charge.

You should get the exam first anyway, if you just need reading glasses and have no astigmatism and need roughly the same correction for both eyes you can use drug store glasses

    Does that mean drinking? lol

    Surprisingly, no :-)

    It meant watching a movie
  • Does anyone know - for a regular eye exam/checkup, is it better or any different to go to a doctor rather than an eyeglass store?

    Seconded.
And if you go late in the day Adam will buy you beer at the Black Horse right after.

I know at the place on 7th and President and at Urban Optical, the people doing the exams are doctors.
  • I hadn't been to Park West Vision in WindsortTerrace for a couple of years because my coverage changed, but just went back to see Dr. Capetola. I will never go anywhere else.
  • I have been going to Park West Vision for more years than I'd like to remember....I think Dr. Capetola and the entire staff are the best!
  • I called urban optical and Park West, Urban wants $65 for an eye exam, Park West wants "about $100", so, seeing as they both had good reviews when i googled them, I am going with Urban, thanks everyone.
  • Without question, Dr. Capetola at Park West Vision, is the best. I've been going to him for years and can't rave about him enough. Btw, they also have good prices on their frames.
  • I second or third Urban Optical. We've been going for years.

You can't beat the twice a year Alain Mikli sample sale for prices on frames $500 frames for $80
  • The eye doctors at the place on 7th and President are traveling doctors, it's not actually their office. They have a tiny room in back where they do the exams. I've gone to them, and they are fine for a check up. They may be good for more, but but if I was going for anything more than a checkup, I'd go to a doctor who had their own office.
