Where to donate clothes? — Brooklynian

Where to donate clothes?

jam290
edited November -1 in Park Slope
Now that the Salvation Army on Flatbush has closed, where can I donate used (good condition) clothing? I searched the message boards and haven't found anything recent posted.

I'm in Park Slope (9th St and 7th Ave) without a car, so anything local would be helpful. Thanks!

  • Search failed you. Home Depot parking lot or freecycle.com
  • Green market textile xchange or Housing Works.
  • You can call St. Mary's to schedule a pick up of clothing anytime: 718-529-7825 then just put the bag of clothing outside with a note marking it for St. Mary's and they will leave a receipt in your mailbox.

I use them all the time. They are great.
  • Every Saturday at the Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket.
  • Assuming you are female, the woman's shelter in the armory on 14th between 7th and 8th accepts donations. My wife did it a couple days ago.
  • Entrance is on 8th ave

The best way to donate cloths is to bring the cloths directly to a local shelter. The people there can't even afford the prices at Salvation army. I've done over and over again. They'll be so much more thankful for you donation and you never know; your donation may be the highlight of someone's day.

Do you know if they only accept clothes certain days/hours?
  • My wife thinks any time.

Tried to donate to CHIPS this past week and they said they only take men's clothing, nothing else. (I wish their web site specified that - woulda saved me a trip)
  • Lowe's parking Lot. 9th st. 2nd avenue.
  • Any info for Sunset Park clothe drop-offs?
  • the women's shelter at the armory on 8th avenue seemed very appreciative when i dropped-off a huge bags of women's coats the other evening.. thanks for the tip.
  • Hi,

My name is Jackie, I work with Here's Life Inner City NY (www.hlicnyc.org).

From now until November 11th, HLIC New York is trying to raise enough money to sponsor 7,000 Boxes of Love for families in need in the NY metro area.

The food is delivered to hungry families just in time for Thanksgiving. Each Box of Love feeds a family of six and includes a ham or chicken along with vegetables, potatoes, juice, yams, apple or cranberry sauce, bread, fruit, dessert, and more (http://bit.ly/gBu8Q).
Since there are only 6 days left for this cause, I am trying to reach out to as many New Yorkers as possible.

Please follow the below links for more info-->

Thanks for your blessings & Warm Wishes:)

  • Uuuuum are you making clothes out of the food donations? Otherwise why post here?

I dropped a whole cart at Lowe's this weekend.
  • Goodwill is great. Its a good cause, providing cheap clothes for people who can't afford more expensive stuff, and its not affiliated with any particular religion/denomination!
  • I second St. Mary's. They are professional, reliable and a great charity. I have also had success with CHIPS, though I do find them to be a bit picky with clothing (being out of season etc.)

  • St. Mary's will be picking up in Park Slope on Wednesday 11/24 between 8 and 3

If you have clothes to be donated call 718-529-6070

  • CHIPS for men and the armory spot for women are good bets.

Seasonal items are really what helps if you have it. So coats, sweatshirts, boots, gloves, etc are great right now.

  • The residents of the armory will need and appreciate the clothes, so don't let my anecdotes below discourage you, but:

The Armory Shelter throws out dozens of garbage bags full of clothes every week; these are much appreciated by the regulars with the handcarts who come and sort through it at night, and seem to carry most of it away.

They can't compete with the insiders, of course - the janitorial staff who drop off a few select bags of 'garbage' in a special spot, and then dispatch friends who come walking up the sidewalk a few minutes later, grab said bags without so much as a second look, and walk away. (Might be the same staff who just got off their shift and changed into their civvies.) Don't know if those contain clothes, or food, or other goodies.

Tune in next week for another episode of 15th Street Secrets: The parking garage that street-parks it wards.

  • Hi all,

  • On board with St. Mary's. I Had 6 huge bags of clothes. They picked them up no problem.

  • I tried unsuccessfully to find out if the Armory accepts linens. I have clean lovely things that could use a new home. Does anyone know? Otherwise I'll head to Lowe's.
