sick stray cat question — Brooklynian

sick stray cat question

I feed a cat in my backyard several times a day. I just saw that he has a good size cut above one eye and both eyes have what looks to be white puss or white something under them.

I just called two vets that I use asking for a general antibiotic to put in the cat’s food to help the cat fight infection, but both vets said they have to see the cat to prescribe something. Catching the cat and bringing him in to see the vet is not possible. I can’t get even close to the cat.

Are there any vets in the Slope who would prescribe something without seeing the cat?

  • If you can't get close to the cat, how are you going to put stuff on its eyes?
  • I think AB was hoping for something to put in the food.

AB, from my pet experience, all eye infections have been treated with a topical that had to be put in the eyes, never a pill. :/
  • My gut is that there is probably an antibiotic that could be put in the cat’s food that would also be appropriate. If by chance the cut and eye puss are unrelated (which I doubt) there may be a general antibiotic that would help fight both infections. I have rescued a cat (one of my current pets) and my parents have rescued numerous dogs and I know that various treatment options are possible.
  • OQueen,

Thank you. You may be right, in which case, the cat may be in trouble. But I am pretty sure there are general antibiotics that would help (or wouldn't hurt). If the cat gets worse, I may be able to catch him. I hope he doesn't get worse of course.
  • (oops....am a spaz...carry on)
  • maybe you can post on the pet board & find someone with the equipment to help you trap & treat this poor 'lil sick kitty. laura b. might have some ideas, too! good luck!
  • You can put his or her food in a trap that will close after he enters it, and then take the cat either to your vet or the the Humane Society, where they will gladly see to his or her medical care. You can also give them a call to ask for advice on how to trap the cat. Sandra is the name of the woman who handles feral cats, I believe, and she's been wonderful whenever I've gone down there.

They've never charged me anything, but I always make a donation.
  • Do a search for a Trap Neuter Release (TNR) program, they'll be able to catch him and get him medicated. Here are some links I have Slope Street Cats is our local TNR, but there are more. Please try and get him help soon! A blind feral will most likely die and winter snow season is coming on too!

  • Subject: cat

Mamacita is totally correct that the cat needs treatment right away. He won't last out there if he's blind. Hav-A-Heart traps are very easy to use and some food inside will lure him fairly easily. In my experiece, slightly heating some opened canned cat food in a microwave and placing it in the trap works well. The smell makes it harder to resist and if he is having trouble seeing, it'll make it easier for him to locate the food.

You're all probably right that the cat will need anitbiotics and a salve of some sort applied directly to the wound. Anything is better than nothing to help this poor guy.

It's very good of you to take care of any feral cat. Everyone needs someone at some time in their lives and it's great that you're there to help.
  • Gunny sack, string, rock, east river...

WHAT!? That's terrible. I can't believe you said that.

    Fucking hysterical.
  • Thanks everyone for your responses. The cat has been coming 2-3 times a day as usual and has been eating 2 cans or more of cat food a day (as usual). He looks much, much better. The eyes no longer have white gunk under them and there is no sign of infection above the eye. It is amazing to me how tough some stray cats are. It looks like the cat is forming a scar above his eye where the gash was and is fine.
