Prospect Heights GYM - I need to get in shape! — Brooklynian

Prospect Heights GYM - I need to get in shape!

I would very much appreciate some suggestions about places in the nabe to join so that I can get in shape. I am leaning towards the Eastern Athletic Club on Eastern Parkway because of its proximity and for the pool. Is anyone a member? There's also Crunch but I don't know if it is for me. I love pilates (if you call the dvds you get at B & N a good workout) but I think I need a facility to go to.

Please include prices in your suggestions - Thank You!

  • I like EAC -- just re-joined, in fact. Nothing beats swimming in their pool in the sunlight flooding in through the windows.....they have promos, you'd need to call to see what the current price is. I think I'm paying $120 a month.....
  • Im paying about $90 per month for Crunch (I joined with a discount though). It works for me, although it can get a little crowded there on Monday and Tuesday evenings.
  • I go to crunch, but only because of an offer through work. If money is no object, I've heard very good things about EAC.
  • Crunch can be very crowded in the evening. If your only time to work out is 6-9 you might not like it. They do have pilates there, but I have no idea what the arrangement is (possibly you hire an instructor the way you do a trainer...in which case you're paying both a monthly membership fee + a per-session fee for the instructor, which may be a little pricey)
  • If you're willing to travel a bit, the YMCA on Bedford and Monroe is great and cheap. The B...48? puts you right there, and it's only $40/month. Brand new equipment, pool, basketball court and track all indoors. Spin classes, dance classes, yoga, all that horsepoop. If you bike it's a short short trip; if you use public transportation I think you can take the Classon bus up to Monroe and walk 2 aves over. I've been there for 3.5 years now and I love it!
  • Are there any cheaper options around? I was a member of EAC for years (would recommend it, though not sure how it's changed since the Meier building joined it). But I quit when the price became untenable.. looking to spend less than I would for Crunch. Is the YMCA it the only thing cheaper?

EAC is really nice and has good views and a good vibe - just super pricey.
  • Oops - Cool The Kid - just saw your post. Looks like a good option..
  • Also, there's the Dodge YMCA in Downtown Brooklyn on Atlantic Avenue jut below Court Street. Easily accessible from the Borough Hall station, which ash the 2,3,4,5,N,and R (I think) and also the B41,B65,B67, and B63! It's the same price as the other YMCA, also all of the classes are included. It has everything that "Cool The Kid" posted about at the other YMCA, and all of the staff are really friendly and really want to help you stay healthy/lose weight/achieve your goal. I have lost 40 pounds in the year and a half I've been going there, largely thanks to all of the staff there who will answer any question you have about how to work a certain area or anything else regarding weight/health, etc. It's like having PErsonal Trainers to consult, for free! There is barely ever a wait for any machine, onyl once in a while during peak hours for the new fancy treadmills that hook your ipod and make the screen into a touch screen of you iPod, but at most it's a 5 minute wait. It's incredible! I can;t say enough about it!
  • Beside the fact that I am a former employee of EAC, I believe that you will not find anywhere else that will come close to what you'll get there. At the Prospect Club the pool is INCOMPRABALE! The best pool in Brooklyn; one of the best pools in the city. Wide variety of service choices - a bright, airy atmosphere. Truely a great place. Maybe a bit pricey but you get what you pay for. If you are investing in your health and well-being, the price gets put into perspective.

    I'd go with EAC!
  • If we could all make the progress our new friend Aryeh211lion (and you do look fabulous, darling) has made, the Dodge Y sounds pretty great -- although a bit far for me since it's not near where I am at any point during the day. I belong to Crunch but haven't gone in a while. Maybe this is the impetus I need.

(Yes, Mr. Lion -- I live around the corner from you. You know my car -- at least the old Volvo -- and me, and my kids, and my husband well.)
  • haha iowagirl. are ur initials E.S.? and thank you. The Dodge is definitely far, but in terms of value and quality of the machines, it is great. Its easy fro me to go to on the way back from school, which is why i go there.
  • the new york sports club in park slope is one of the nicest in the chain i think, and is a very very clean, well managed gym. it's around $75 a month and located at 5th avenue and 9th street.

or the Y in park slope seems possibly closer than the other Y's mentioned here to you. it's located on 9th street between 6th and 5th avenues. prices there are around 50-60 bucks a month and quite nice for what you get. i believe they have discounts which actually bring the monthly to around $47 a month if you qualify for one of those.

EAC might be nice, but 120 a month is ridiculous, in my opinion. for a gym.
  • I agree, belzjm, about EAC. They may have by far the nicest pool but the Y has nicer weight machines and treadmills/bikes, etc. The ones at EAC are old fashioned and they take about a minute to adjust the weights, while at the Y they have easy newer weights that take ten seconds and the treadmills are really nice and electronic, and they even charge your iPod and turn the screen into a touch screen of what is on your iPod.

    The Y is great!
  • A211L: yes, indeed. C'est moi.

Now I just have to get myself to the gym.
  • haha... it makes you feel really good! :)
  • The citywide YMCA membership is $90 for access to any location in any boro. Each branch has a pool, classes, new machines, good vibes, etc.
  • I'm a member of Crunch and have a VERY reasonable membership through my husband's work - $58/month. I dig it there but I don't do many classes - mostly do my own thing. One clear advantage Crunch has over EAC is it offers childcare, so if that's a factor, you should consider Crunch.

Every day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. you can drop your munchkin off with the warm, friendly and experienced babysitters on the ground level of the gym for $4.
  • SterlingLady, ur rate isn't reflective of what's available to the public.....

The Y is up to $43/mo, and is still awesome. However, it's pretty crowded with the new year wave, even in the middle of the day. But it's worth it. It's so worth it.
  • On the posts here, I went to check out the YMCA on Monroe and Bedford -- It is 2 blocks from the B48 or 6 blocks from the S/C stop at Fulton/Franklin Ave. As a teacher, (they don't advertise this!) I get a membership for $33 a month -- and if you sign up in January there is no fee for joining. On their website you can get a 1-day pass to check it out. And if you go, ASK if you get a discount -- I asked out of curiousity and it turns out I got one.
  • Wow, this is the first place online where I have heard such good reviews of EAC. I've read some really nasty ones on Google search results, however this post makes me feel better about checking it out. I was also looking at a possible membership here, as the location is within walking distance, however that's all I know about it. Sounds expensive though.

Either way, I have a relative that goes to the Crunch on Flatbush, she loves it, however I can't stand crowded gyms.
  • I'm bumping this because it's a bit old. I'm moving to the neighborhood and trying to figure out which gym to join. I'm a New York Sports Club member now, but that'll be about a half-hour walk according to Google. Crunch and EAC are both getting weak reviews here and other places online, so I don't know what to do! (I also don't want anything more expensive than NYSC.)

  • I just quit the NYSC in Park Slope because it has gone so downhill (and I was a long time member). I joined the Y across the street and I love it...it's less money and even though the layout is a bit strange the equipment is new and in working order (unlike NYSC where machines can be broken for weeks at a time).

  • My opinion of the Eastern Athletic Club pool at the Grand Army Plaza location is that it is totally inadequate for any sort of even halfway serious swimming. The water is far too warm-- it was about 88 the last time I swam there. A workout pool should be 78-80 degrees. A water temp in the mid or high 80s has an effect similar to doing bikram yoga. Also the chemical balance in that pool is bad and left me with the feeling that a hole was being burned in my lungs by the fumes. It's true that there's a lack of decent pools in Brooklyn, but if you are a swimmer in the slope/heights area, I'd recommend Berkeley-Carroll as a modest step up from EAC. Also I've heard the brand new pool at Brooklyn College has a community membership and lap swim hours, but that's a bit of a hike.

As for the rest of the EAC facility, it's passable but not by any stretch impressive. To me, membership is worth no more than $50 a month in a place like that (which is less than half of what they are charging). If you're willing to take a trip on the subway, there will be a beautiful new Asphalt Green facility in Battery Park City in a few months, and I expect their pool will be top notch. Asphalt Green currently operates the best pool in the city on the Upper East Side.

  • I won't be using the pool wherever I go-- mostly just machines.

  • I lost my job but still wanted to belong to a gym. I found Planet Fitness on Duffield Street, Just off Fulton Street. The gym is located just off the 2,3 at Hoyt Street or by the B25 bus. It is $10 month. No muss, no fuss. For the money, you can't beat it. It is a clean facility, you just have to bring your own towel. At times i miss towel service but for $10 month you can't beat it.

  • There is a "gym" on prospect between carlton and vandy. Does anyone know about it?

I go to crunch which is ok, would be better if the heavy bag was up all the time.
