How to choose Gas Electrical supplier in Bklyn?
Hello
I am looking for a gas supplier in North Park Slope/Boerum Hill and I have no clue at all how to choose this. In Manhattan I've had gas & electricity with ConEd. Is it good- or even the only option to choose ConEd in Bklyn for electricity? What about gas? Thanks very much! Let me add that I'm from overseas so I am not familiar with how it works over here or what kind of options one has. Thanks.

In Brooklyn, Con Ed will be your electric supplier; National Grid (formerly Keyspan, and before that Brooklyn Union Gas) will be your gas supplier.
I'm almost certain that there's no alternative, although Con Ed does offer different energy generators to choose from (eg: renewables, etc). Check their website. -

Indeed, the only "competition" is the choice of a renewable ESCO that you can pay for generation of power (you still pay delivery costs to Con Ed). The difference in what you might pay for these renewable sources v. Con Ed changes monthly, so switching to one of these just for the money doesn't make sense IMHO.

You will likely hear from a particularly persistent one called IDT soon; They have kids come around (sometimes pretending to work for Con Ed) to try to convince you to bring you your current bill so they can switch you over.
If you choose to switch to another ESCO, I believe you have many choices, so perhaps the excessively pushy IDT shouldn't be your first.
Here's an older link about this company and its relationship to ConEd:

Do yourself a favor. Contact Con Edison (electric supply) and National Grid (gas supply) and set up your accounts beforehand. Additionally, right at the outset, tell each of them to place a block on the accounts that prevents interloping companies from switching you without your consent. Forget about ESCO's and the like; it's not worth it.

Thank you all very much for your replies, very kind. Much appreciated. Cheers.

G2BBON: ESCOs may not be worth it from a strictly financial perspective, but if someone wishes to pay more to support renewable energy sources (eg: wind, solar), then it may be worth it from an environmental, social perspective.
