They got information that the coffee shop offers pastry at half of after 6, it caused a mad rush and turned out to be another false alarm
-
More likely the laundromat was having a sale on dirty laundry. Everybody loves other people's dirty laundry.

Two of the worst jokes I've heard in quite some time...

Agreed!

On the corner of Eastern Parkway and New York Ave. (outside my house), there is an NYPD Mobile Command Unit, several NYPD vans and one of those towers that has a light on it. Also there are foot patrols. When I asked one of the officers if something had happened, he responded cryptically (but politely) and said they were there to PREVENT something from happening. They mobilized this afternoon after 3 pm and are there in full force still now at 9. Does anyone have any information on what is happening?
-
...sounds like somebody either:
Pissed the cops off and they are responding with a show of force, OR was the subject of a very credible threat, and they are responding with a show of force.
(I've seen such tactics used after someone throws an object at a cop and they don't catch him/her).
If you've ever wanted to read the Times on a folding chair at midnight without fear of being bothered, it sounds like tonight would be a nice night to do it at NY Ave and EP. -
There is a big religious conference taking place at the Jewish Center on Eastern Parkway until Sunday afternoon.

Sadly, also a time that police are needed.
...crazy world. -
AHA! Religious conference... That makes sense. Thanks all for the clarification. Now I just have to find a way to block out the mobile unit's flashing lights that are apparently going to illuminate my bedroom til Sunday.
-
oy indeed!
-
Yes, the security is for the conference that's taking place. Should all be gone by early next week.
-
Does anyone have more info about the conference?

Yes. It's under the auspicious of the "Chabad-Lubavitch" movement. Brings together all the people who run "Chabad Centers" around the world (several thousand). Remember the attacks in Mumbai last year around Thanksgiving? One of the places they attacked was the "Chabad Center" there? Hence the extra security now... -
Got it. Yeah, Crown Heights is the center of the Chabad-Lubavitchers, no?

Yes. The biggest community world-wide, although there are many others the US and abroad.
Howdy, Stranger!
