  • i'm on the internet talking about the internet.
  • sometimes i look at the wiring in my building and wonder how i even get internet at all

I just noticed that speedtest keeps a "Your Summary" tab up at the top of their page, with your IP address, speeds, and ping time, and they'll let you download a csv file of it.

Which makes WhyFi's test-and-document idea much easier to implement. I am not at all volunteering to be the boss of the web site, but I could probably be persuaded to help data-crunch. Either way, if my .csv is of some use, I can send it along.
  • I'd be happy to contribute some data. Because mine is often like this:

    image
  • REDACTED :-)
  • ^^^ you're not a part of the customer base that needs to be concerned - Boost customers use different hardware on the Cablevision end so your UL/DL aren't the least bit relevant.
  • Mine just slowed to a standstill. I rebooted the modem and it got much better. Now:

    Is that good?
  • God damn where the hell are you guys

My interwebs have been reliable ever since that massive outage a few months back

    I'm in the Bergen/Dean/NYA/Nostrand area

Tech coming Fri. Waste of our time.
  • Yeah, Thursday night Safari would not load a single page because the server was too busy, so I couldn't get anything accomplished! UCH!
  • Well I hate to say it, but I switched to Boost last week and now I'm getting the speeds I should have gotten all along. It's been consistently between 15 and 20 Mbps.

Looks like you have to pay extra to get normal service.

Actually, I got boost free for a year for switching back to cablevision from fios. The speeds vary greatly from 8-30mbit. Right now I'm getting 10mbit over usenet (which I max out on).My point is boost is being oversold and is slow as hell. Optonline Ultra looks great but it's pricey for a home user.
  • Subject: cable service

in the last 36 hours myphone service was out for 6 hrs my tv for 24 and my internet is acting like dialup.....now they are all working..since i had reported the problems and was given a service appointment, i called to ask them what to do...i was told that no problem was reported in this area and if all the services were working when the serviceman came, i would have to pay for the call.!!!

would you all please call whenever there is a problem so that maybe they will do something aboutit?!!!!!!!!

Post speed test results here, I'm compiling. Also, we have a lot of results from the late evenings, when speeds are at their slowest, but we also need to fill in the daytime results and evening slide.

Emily, your ping latency is horrendous - is that hardwired? Between the ping and the upload speed (which rarely gets taxed), I would say to double check your wiring. Also, do a test at pingtest.net.
  • I think about a day after I posted that one my husband restarted the wifi router and everything. I'm hardwired on a desktop but I think it goes through the wireless router anyway. This is better, but still not what I'm paying for:

  • Great to find this thread. I was running under 6 with Boost and wound up complaining several times a week. We had NINE appointments and follow-up visits (I work from home so speed is vital for my job). It got to the point that each of the technicians knew the names of our pets. However, things didn't get better until a month later. Right now, our speed is around 16 or 17 and it actually tested at 21 on one occasion. Since it's supposed to be close to 3O, that's not great but better.
Cablevision doesn't respond unless you make a lot of noise and follow up - that's my experience.

We'll check out Fios when it becomes available but I heard the modem is really big and uses a lot more electricity (not sure if that's true).
  • LOL.... When Fios gets here I'm switching even if Fios EATS PUPPIES! I see what you mean about hounding them, but I just don't have time. (And I shouldn't have to.)

  • I was having major internet problems for weeks. I bought a new splitter from radio radio shack and now I am flying.

Its the radio shack bidirectional 75-0hm 2-way splitter
its 10 bucks and comes in fancy shiny gold.
  • What a disaster. My connection is so bad right now I can't even get Speedtest to load. My Speedtest iPhone app is showing 66kbps down. Barely better then dial-up. Cablevision customer support says they're seeing 50% packet loss to my modem. Of course they want to send out a tech. Just like last time. And the day the tech was scheduled to arrive the speed returned.
  • Correction:

    39 Kbits/s down
    671 Kbits/s up

    29 ms latency
  • We've had solid service for almost two weeks now, since we had them come and re-wire the whole apartment and do something at the pole (not sure what).

But 12/24, everything went out again, neighborhood-wide. If it affected you, since it lasted more than 4 hours (and is in fact still going on), you should call and get a credit on your bill.

I had a service call scheduled for today at 2pm, which I nearly canceled since everything had been back up for a few hours, but they called me first to cancel because it's more than just me this time.

Naturally, it all went back down again. I've been on hold for ages, long enough for it to come back up. Speeds are still terrible.

  • Fri/Sat was the worst stretch of connection issues I have had in the 2+ years I have lived in PH and I am certain if I do not call right now I will not get a credit without asking.

On another note I can't wait to have more competition!
  • Do you guys know if OOL limits the amount of permitted TCP Connections? I'm trying to increase the number of half-open connections for my torrenting.)
  • Don't know about the number of connections, but they'll limit your upload bandwidth, period, if they think that you're "hosting a server," which torrenting falls under, in their book.
  • WhyFi
they just created a monopoly with their service and that's why no one can switch to something better or similar.... they're such dicks...)
p.s. i have OOL boost and still im not satifsfied with the service. btw does "the limit on your upload bandwidth period" also applied to OOL boost?
p.ss what i tried to do was increase my half-open connections to 500 instead of the default 100 and my internet got messed up. when returned to the default everything was ok. tried reasearching about this issue and i got a general answer - ISP is blocking, router/modem is not strong enough,
Heres a list of devices that are not friendly with p2p programs (Azureus, µTorrent).
These devices experience problems with a big amount of global connections:

    • Because of Port Forwarding:

I don't own any of these devices and still im experiencing probs. any ideas how to solve them?)
