Completely Impractical things you would buy if you had $5k — Brooklynian

Completely Impractical things you would buy if you had $5k

In this thread you post things you would buy TODAY if you could, but are completely impractical. (I envision it as kind of a variation of "what music is running thru your head thread", but it's about stuff.)

You don't buy the item because
...perhaps your friends would make fun of you.
...perhaps you'd instantly be evicted from your apartment.
...perhaps your partner would decide moving back in with their mother is a good idea.

Only two rules:
1. The item(s) cannot cost more than $5000. So, Ferraris and SoHo apartments need not be dreamed about and linked.

2. The items must actually exist and be readily available. Think ebay and craigslist.

Go!

P.S. Additional Rule for Drunken Revival: You can't post a picture of your favorite porn star.

  • Moug, you should come give my Quickmill Anita and Mazzer Mini a test drive.

I think that I'd split it between a kick-ass bicycle and... a lens or two... and computer shit....

Oh, it's a dual boiler, not a heat exchange like my lowly machine!

Damn! I'd be happy to settle for a Rancilio Silvia and Rocky

    Links or pictures please!

...or the thread is likely to die a quick death.

    C'mon, let's see those items.

    Computer Shit -

Case - I want either a Silverstone Raven or Fortress 2... the most notable things about them is that they rotate the orientation of the motherboard 90 degrees, letting the hot air vent up and out - a more natural and efficient direction...

Two new graphics cards, too -

I'm sure that that's a rip on tube/iPod combo, but you CAN actually get some decent performance out of the ol' iPod - you don't have to put MP3s on the thing, you can do lossless. Here's a $5k tube/iPod combo that works -

    image
Wadia i170 ($379) - only iPod dock in the world that can take a digital signal off of an iPod... that digital signal gets fed to...

    image
Cambridge Audio DAC Magic ($479) - great little digital to analog converter which will serve as a source for -

    image
Rogue Audio Cronus ($1799) - not just a great value tube integrated, but a great tube integrated, period. To pair with the Cronus, I would suggest the...

    image
Sonics Argentas ($1500/pair) - stupidly good for the money, great sound stage/imaging, nice tonal balance, transparent as all get out.

Full disclaimer - I work in high-end audio, I sell all of these products. That being said, you'd be f*cking shocked at how good this little system would be... yes, even with an iPod front end.

Aha - I kind of knew better not to try and get in an electronics pissing match with you, but couldn't help it. :D You and I should talk sometime - I have a good amp (Denon), quite good turntable (Techincs) and pretty crappy speakers.

OK - not to derail this thread:

  • Crap. I don't know what I'd buy with 5 geez. Like , I need to think about it.

Hmm. I'll come back when I know.
  • I hereby declare you can wish again.

Here's my second wish. A mobile man cave for $4999 :)

off course, I'd like a parking spot where ever I chose to park it as well.
    (that's the impractical part).

I could create a knock off of This Old House (I'd need additional skills too, but who cares).

Tisk-tisk - you should have known better - didn't you see my interview in the October issue of Home Entertainment? I'm good at finding enjoyable ways to spend people's money.

Okay, if I get to wish again, I guess that I'd look for a used Ducati Monster -

with all the money i'd save on rent, i could afford monthly parking for it, and i could stop losing sleep wondering where the hell i'd go if i lost my job.
  • Trench coat + new jeans + shoes
Wheels + crank + bars + seat + seat post for my Iro
New receiver for my home stereo
Maybe another 6 months of insurance for my car, instead of selling it.

$5K is really nothing in the grand scheme of things. Not even a full year of my share of rent.

A ticket to see my friends in Mexico $350

    Adopt A Classroom $1001
  • Oops! Sorry - I didn't see impractical until after I posted. My wife would say the Vespa, lens and trip to Mexico are all impractical. The other two would be fine.
  • I hereby award Rosweed 1 point for the combination of having a grandson AND wanting a Vespa.
  • 13 inch Macbook Pro configured with 8 GB of RAM, 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, a 256GB solid-state drive, all available pre-installed software, and for extra impracticality, a 3-year AppleCare Protection Plan.

  • As long as we're talking about things I don't need, don't have room for, and have no real use for, but really kind of want:

  • I would add about 200$ to that 5,000 and buy THIS beautiful walnut Thormahlen
    Cygnet Harpimage
  • Whynot has a scroll saw...i'm sure he'd be glad to make you a harp.
  • Dutch Tub. It's a portable wood fired hot tub.
