how to start up w national grid, con ed, time warner?

edited November -1 in Park Slope
i feel dumb asking this question but i just moved within the slope and am having amnesia or something. my new place has electricity and gas for now, but i know the minutes are ticking away and eventually they'll get cut off. can anyone remind me of how to change the con ed and national grid billing to my address before this happens?

separately, time warner of course wants me to go for their 3 in one deal involving phone, cable and internet, i don't know that i need a phone. supposing i want cable internet and DVR and regular cable (not HBO and such, just TNT and normal cable channels), does anyone have any thoughts about what the best deal is? i know they're going to try to sell me a bill of goods.

PM's are good on this one if you want. or answer publicly. as you prefer.

thanks!

  • Hi.

This is for BOTH Con Ed and National Grid

Call them IMMEDIATELY!!! Call them before service is cut off and you have to pay a re-connect fee. All you have to do is call them and give them your old account number from your previous residence if you were the payer at your prior residence. They will just transfer that account at that address into your name

If you have to open up a new account: it is a simple call with your personal information, address etc to get an account. If you do have to open up a new account there is a fee associated with new accounts.
  • Speaking from experience - they'll give you ample warning before they cut you off. They'll mail you a letter saying "we notice someone is using gas/electricity at this address" and asking you to call to get billing set up. You'll still have another month or two of this letter before they threaten cut-off.

Wow, this makes me sound really irresponsible. I wasn't actually "living" in my apt when I first moved in and kinda forgot about utilities...
  • Just call the utility companies, it will only take a few minutes.

Time Warner is a little different, because you will have to have the guy come out, and of course they will charge you an installation fee, which is a rip off. You don't have to get the phone package if you don't want it.

Interestingly, I was able to negotiate a lower rate for cable and internet by just asking for one. I said something like I couldn't afford the first rate they quoted and asked if they have cheaper options, otherwise I might have to go to the competition...before I knew it they were offering to "work with me", because "times are hard for everyone". I'm saving about $30 a month from that !

Additionally, you can usually get a month or two of free HBO and Showtime for setting up a new account, or by calling them to complain about something.
  • Remember, you are calling them and asking for instructions for how to give them your money...They won't make it difficult...Except for cablevision, which is incompetant.
  • TW cable + internet without dvr is 92 for us. I remember setting up National Grid and ConEd being incredibly easy compared to tw. Call tw first!
