Heading towards Cherry Hill/Philly...
So, this Thanksgiving I'll be heading out to see my family that just moved from the NYC area to over by Cherry Hill (seriously, why?)
At any rate, I have been doing my public transportation research and it appears that the trip is about 4 hours and like 2 or 3 transfers. All I can think of at the moment, is that I must be doing something wrong.
So, questions:
- Does anyone have a good direct route to get to Cherry Hill (using public transportation)?
- I should mention that I will be travelling with my dog (hence the annoyance of more than 3 hours), so I know that Amtrak is out of the question. I know I can take the pooch in a bag on NJ Transit, but I haven't gotten a clear answer about SEPTA - anyone know?
Anyway, thanks for any info you might have - I just want to get there in one piece with my dog in as short a time as possible using public transportation.
Thoughts?

Could you take a bus to philly and then have someone pick you up from there? Bolt Bus is like $2 if you book ahead of time..

I don't know where Cherry Hill is but I've often caught the Greyhound bus from Port Authority to Philly chinatown which is under 2 hours. Don't know what their pet policy is. Going via Trenton and Septa is more expensive and a tediously long way round.
-
Actually, the chinatown bus often (perhaps always?) makes a stop in Cherry Hill. The Bolt Bus may as well, but I can't recall exactly if it did last time I took it.
I would call the operators of the various bus services to philly and find out which make the stop. -
thanks for the quick replies all! I also thought about the many buses, but I am almost positive they don't allow dogs (even in bags). I know for a fact Greyhound doesn't, but I will look into Bolt, Mega, and the Chinatown buses. Do you happen to know?
-
Just checked -- bolt does not allow pets. sorry.
-
I was just looking at the Chinatown buses (trying to figure out how to get to Gettysburg for Thanksgiving - pretty sure it isn't going to happen) and they don't allow dogs. That being said, I have seen someone with a dog on them. I can't imagine their enforcement of that (or any) rule is very tough...

I'm from Philadelphia and I make this trip all the time. I have never seen anyone bring a dog on septa, but if the dog were small enough to fit in a carrier, it might be ok.
Don't know if this is an option for you, but could someone with a car pick you up at the Trenton station ? Its not that far from Cherry Hill, probably about a 40 minute drive and it would make your life a lot easier. -
Instead of Trenton, Hamilton is much closer to cherry hill (like 20 minute drive).
That would be NJ Transit (not sure if dogs are ok or not) -

Bolt is Greyhound, or owned by Greyhound anyway -
If you jump on a Greyhound, it'll stop in Mt. Laurel, and that's not far from Cherry Hill, if you can get somebody to pick you up.
I grew up there, so that's why I know. -
I did a bit more snooping around and finally convinced some family folks to just pick me up in philly (they were not so keen on going any further on Thanksgiving...). I wish I could have taken one of the umpteen buses, but I can't risk them enforcing their no dog policy and then being stuck. NJ Transit definitely allows small dogs in carriers (as long as you can keep it on your lap) and apparently, the NYC-Trenton, Trenton-Philly trains are run by NJ Transit so I am going to labor under the assumption it will all work out (fingers crossed).
Thanks for all the other info...I will be making this trip often during the year so it is good to have lots of possibilities...and I am quite unfamiliar with that side of Jersey. -
^ the less you know about NJ, the better. I'm just sayin' :-)
-
Oooo, I should really learn how to read...apparently, the "SEPT" next to the Trenton-Philly route stands for SEPTA. That being said, public transportation seems to always let small dogs in carriers. I'm just going to cross my fingers...to be on the safe side!
-
You're good to go with the dog on SEPTA - http://www.septa.com/inside/customer_service/faqs.html
-
SCORE! Thanks! SEPTA really made it hard to find the FAQ...
And hey there Flexichick, easy on the Jersey jokes...the Toxic Avenger(s) can get very defensive!
-
It's not my fault you have to go to Jersey :-)

Ah, yet another thread of useless comments from Park Slopers where they get to make themselves feel better by bashing New Jersey for no apparent reason!
Now, to help the original poster-- like someone else suggested, your most direct & best bet is to take the Greyhound to Mt. Laurel. It's like 10-15 minutes from there, assuming someone can pick you up. If not, they have cabs at the Greyhound station. Good luck! I think you'll find Cherry Hill is quite nice. -
Or: Take Northeast Corridor line on NJ Transit from Penn Station to Hamilton. Super easy. Will be about 20 minutes to Cherry Hill and you can carry a dog on NJ Transit as long as its in a carrier - I see it all the time.
Howdy, Stranger!
