mexican coke in the north slope

edited November -1 in Park Slope
finally went to el jalapeno over the weekend.. the experience was fine.. the food was very good.. but what really made my pulse race was the mexican coca-cola that i had with my meal.. i suddenly flashed-back to my youth, and the way coke used to taste.

maybe it's been available elsewhere in the north slope up to now, and i just didn't notice.. still, i thought i should clue you in..

  • thanks for the tip!
  • i am planning to get there soon -- the only other place I know with Mexican coke is the skate shop on Park Place near Classon -- so not at all in the slope.
  • Okay, although it frightens me that you're all going to go buy up the supply from my secret location, I'm feeling generous. The deli next to Press 195 sells Mexican Coke.

    You're welcome.
  • mexican coke

    teehee
  • I totally thought this post was going to go in a different direction, but I love the Mexican coke. Muchas gracias.
  • I tried a Mexican Coke & an American Coke one after the other & I couldn't tell the difference - or rather I couldn't tell which was better. Is this all just a psychological thing? Admittedly I'm not a Coke drinker & may not appreciate the finer distinctions of Cokeness.
  • I have done many trips to Mexico and though I never was interested in drinking Coke in Brooklyn it became an addiction when I was way South. Zebra.. it surprised me that you could not tell the difference. It is the difference with why bother drinking this stuff vs. geez.. what a great beverage.
  • Maybe so... but that raises the question - why do so many millions of Americans bother drinking the stuff?

Why do so many Americans bother listening to shitty MP3s on their iPods? You get used to something, it becomes the standard in your mind and you forget what the experience can really be like.

Please, never use the majority as a barometer for good taste.

We still on for Olive Garden tomorrow night?

    +1
  • anybody know where I can find Mexican coke further south in the Slope? or in WT?
  • anyone have an opinion on the Kosher for Passover Coke vs. Mexican Coke?
  • I was about to bring up Kosher for Passover Coke, which we stock up on. I'll do a triple blind taste test and let you guys know.
  • WhyFi....you're my new hero for the mp3 comment. some who knows what a "lossy" audio file means.....amazing. :)

however, I am a fan of attention to detail, and serving mexican Coke is always a nice little touch in a restaurant.

I can never find the kosher Coke. Where do you buy it? It has a yellow cap, right?
  • I'm dubious of this whole Kosher Coke business. If Coca-Cola's recipe is a secret, how can any Rabbi determine whether the drink is truly Kosher or not? What if the secret ingredient is pork?
  • "Kosher Coke is porcine!" (imagine Charlton Heston yelling this).
  • Fairway stocks Kosher for Passover Coke which I have only seen in two liter bottles with the yellow cap. Seasonly, of course. I've also seen it in my local bodega -- perhaps a surplus, judging from the timing (after the holiday).
  • WhyFi, I hear what you're saying, but people listen to mp3s on their iPods because you can't cram a vinyl LP or 45 into an iPod. It's a choice made out of convenience. Drinking Coke is different because there is a practically unlimited number of refreshing beverages one can enjoy instead of Coke.
  • I love going to Mexico or Central America. I get to drink sugar Coca-cola and eat the old fried McDonald's Apple Pies. Yum!

Lossless - sure, you can only carry around 150 albums, not 1500, but I'll make the sacrifice.

And there are quite a few tasty options for dining, but McDonald's, like Coke, is a known quantity - you know what you're going to get, even if it isn't that good. Eat it enough, and your standards are lowered. Settling for familiar mediocrity is a convenience, too, and a powerful one.
  • Why is mexican coke so much better than regular everyday buy at Key Food Coke?

And, since when is there a difference between kosher for passover coke and regular everyday coke (I always assumed that the kosher for passover coke had a blessing from a rabbi and the regular every day coke didn't because for passover you are supposed to be extra special kosher and clean. used to work for a company owned by orthodox and the cleaning they would do right before passover, oy!!)

The difference in taste (And why one is kosher and one isn't) is using sugar vs. high fructose corn syrup...The corn makes it not kosher for passover...

Whether it is better or not (or how much) is subject to individual taste...

Our local grocery store carries it near Passover, and we've also bought it at Fairway.

Ashkenazi Jews don't consume corn during Passover. The high fructose corn syrup is not K4P for us that follow the Ashkenazi tradition.
  • Ah, didn't know about the corn/passover connection, thanks
  • Blinktoe - where is your normal grocery store? I can never find the K4P coke
  • I've heard rumors that Coke will be reintroducing sugar-based Coke in the US. Seems people have finally clued in to the fact that HFCS is killing them.

Pepsi's already done it. They're marketing it as "Pepsi Natural" or somesuch crap.

I recently (last week) had an all-sugar coke (in Morocco). While I can taste the HFCS in some things (jams and jellies), I have to say that I didn't notice a difference. In addition to the sugar, is there a difference in the syrup formula used in Mexican Coke?

Maybe I needed to do a side-by-side. It's been years and years since I've had a regular Coke.
  • I can definitely taste the difference between HFCS Coke (US) vs Sugar Coke.

I can also taste the difference in ketchup. My brother and I went up to Ottawa a few years ago and were eating french fries and they tasted different, but we couldn't figure out why. Finally I looked at the ketchup bottle and saw that it was Heinz Ketchup with sugar instead of HFCS. Got back to the states and saw that they're now selling Heinz organic ketchup with sugar, which has the same taste of the ketchup in Canada.

I'm all for bringing back sugar products.
