Clinton Hill's train service — Brooklynian

Clinton Hill's train service

Subject: Clinton Hill's train service

Hello,

We're thinking about an apartment near Lexington and Classon in Clinton Hill.

The neighborhood seems nice, and there are more amenities (as well as some really gorgeous buildings) the farther west you go.

Our main hesitation is the trains. I don't have much experience with the G (other than our weekend apartment-hunting excursions), but all I hear are horror stories. Is it really dependable enough to be used as a primary train option during the week? I would be taking it up to LIC to get to work in midtown Manhattan. How is it at night?

The C seems like a bit of a walk, and is also not the most dependable train. How do people on this board typically feel about your train options?

  • Over the past 6 years I have found the G Train to be as reliable as any other city train when commuting to Manhattan for my 9-5 job.

Rumors of the G Train's bad service are greatly exaggerated. The only time the G Train is truly terrible is when there's construction and it's running in sections. But that's true of any train in the city.

The only big downside to the G train is that it means if you're going to Manhattan you'll have to transfer (obviously). But other than that, it's fine.
  • Subject: C train

The C's not that far from you. I've been taking it for 10 years now. I'd like to say it's wonderful and the bar car is especially appreciated, but I can't. But it's just as good (or bad) as any other train. I wouldn't let the train issue sway you either way with the apartment, all the trains in NYC are pretty much the same.
  • I work in midtown (Times Square) and take the G from Bedford-Nostrand, transferring to the A/C at Hoyt-Schemerhorn. I've found it as reliable as any other train line in NYC. I have a pretty consistent 50 minute commute, door to door.
  • I'll just agree with the above. When I worked at 23rd & 6th, it was about 40 minutes to Greenpoint Ave on the V to the G.
I work in LIC now, so the commute is really short on the G.
The G gets a bad rap, but like everyone here said, it's no better or worse than most trains, and way less crowded than the L.
After 9, it runs about every 15-20 minutes, so it can suck if you just miss one at Court Square, but still not that bad.
  • For your morning-evening commute the G is just as good as any other line (though only 4 cars vs. 8-10 on other B division lines). I work in NJ so I take a bus from Port Authority and used to take the L from Graham, switch to the A-C-E at 8th Ave and up to 42nd but the morning L can really be a nightmare, especially when college classes are going on and everyone's off to the photography class they'll eventually drop out of at SVA. Switched to taking the G from Nassau and transfering to the E and it's been worlds better. As for Clinton Hill the G will be just as good there, will easily connect you with the L, A/C and F within a few stops. There's also tons of bus options that connect with the subway lines around there.
  • I second BoyGabriel and Maratl. No problem with the G for 9-5 job.
    Forget about the C.
  • It actually depends on where in Midtown. If you are going anywhere on the far Westside, C can be quite a bit quicker just by being a single train commute. If you don't want to walk all the way down to Fulton, you can G over to Hoyt and jump either the C or A express up to the Westside.
