From JFK LGA to Prospect Heights — Brooklynian

From JFK LGA to Prospect Heights

Anyone know any reliable and affordable car services that pick up from the airports and/or excellent directions from the airports to the nabe? Yellow cabs and Brooklyn, they do not mix well. Thanks.

  • Arecibo picks up and drops off at both - don't know what the prices are like now, they were in the $40 region a couple few years ago...

Directions from LGA - I always have the cabbie take the BQE to... I think that the exit is Kent (someone else can confirm), follow the frontage road, left at Washington, straight 'til you reach Prospect Heights...

That's correct. They will try to take you all the way to Tillary, but that's a serious over shoot and adds another 10-15 minutes.

From JFK I've found the best and cheapest route to be Conduit to Atlantic to Eastern Parkway if taking a yellow taxi. I usually pay around $30 before tip.
  • These directions are for my two friends who are visiting from the UK, one arriving at LGA and the other at JFK. Usually, I know the way myself but I am trying to ensure that they do not get the scenic route. Also, called Arecibo, and they don't do airport pick ups. JFK: Belt Parkway to Conduit to Atlantic. LGA: BQE to Kent and left on Washington? Yes, are we all in agreement?
  • Express 11- they're pretty new and will do pick ups for $35 to Crown Heights. They're based in PS, so I imagine it would be even cheaper.
I used them over the weekend for my girlfriend- they took her name and number and called her when the car was close and gave her a specific description of the car and driver. My friend felt very safe (native NYer but living in Fla) and enjoyed her ride.

  • Yup, yup - from JFK, you can take Atlantic all the way or skip over to Eastern Pkwy, depending on traffic/construction.
  • Thanks y'all.

Given traffic on Atlantic, I think it's generally better to switch to Eastern Parkway.
  • From JFK, the AirTrain to A/C or L.I.R.R. to Atlantic should not overwhelm a British citizen.

If it's more than one person, it's not much more to take a cab and it's much faster.

Agreed. Unless they're buried in luggage, the AirTrain to the LIRR is my preferred way to get home from JFK.

Getting TO the airport, I often take a car service. But getting home, I never want to wait in the cab line

The last time I came home I was feeling energetic and I took the bus that went from JFK to the end of the 3 (I can't remember the number, but someone can look it up). While I wouldn't recommend it for a first-timer, I was surprised to find that it was pretty competitive time-wise.

It's the B15 and it's not really a good option unless you land at terminal 4. You'll spend about as much time getting there as you would waiting at the taxi stand.

I did, indeed, land at Terminal 4. That might explain why it was so speedy.

Still, my preferred route from JFK is LIRR to Flatbush (Atlantic).

MOD NOTE: Fixed your quote tags
  • Call Eastern Car Service. Crown Heights to JFK was $35. They are always on time and I have never had a problem with them. http://www.easterncarservice.com/
  • yellow cab never goes the right way even when i yell at then to get on conduit so i always call a car service which is usually just a $5 pickup fee or $0, maybe depending on the time of day.

i like the bus to the 2/3 in theory but it's kind of crowded & loud and people kept talking about me. not good if you've just gotten off the redeye or something.

I do not like the B15 because of the noise AND the funk. It's the smelliest bus I've ever been on. I've taken it a few times when I've had the misfortune of landing at terminal 4 after a long international flight. At this point I really don't want to hear people talking about their baby mama/daddy dramas, brag on their extravagant purchases just before getting off in front of the projects, or other misc. issues that really shouldn't be discussed in public.
  • I always stand outside and flag a cab (I'm on Classon near the shuttle train) and ask if I can pay $20 from Prospect Heights to JFK, but compromise after haggling and pay $25 plus tip. I've never paid more than that, and I travel quite a bit.

I guess I'm just lucky. Okay, maybe cheap.
    :)

Express 11 (formerly 11th Street Car Service) is the best. They've always been a little cheaper for the airport, and I like their drivers better than Eastern and Caricebo. Really good about the follow-through, as Mrs. D points out above.
