Inexpensive Lawyer wanted

A Brooklyn charitable non-profit needs to sell a property that is located upstate. This requires approval from the Supreme Court (in Brooklyn) and also the Attorney General. The buyer's lawyer is upstate NY.

Legal fees are getting prohibitive.

Anyone know a lawyer that is affordable?

You can try South Brooklyn Legal Services they have many attorneys who work pro bono for this group and might be able to help you or point you in the right direction

Anon-44 - Nice generalization about lawyers offering to work for below-market rate to help those in need. I wonder how you would feel about people who make generalizations about those who work in the non-profit world ("coudn't hack it in the for-profit world" - cough, cough)?

Yeah, sure. Lawyers are really kind and generous.

Pro bono work is not required but commonly encouraged by bar associations. Yet recent studies have shown how little most lawyers do. In response to this bad publicity, many firms are requiring pro bono work.

The lawyers offering services now are doing so after public exposure, and not from the goodness of their hearts.

nonetheless, they're doing it. i agree with danielle that your reply sounds...less than gracious.

some lawyers are sleazeballs, many are not. some doctors are power-drunk boors, many are not. some middle school teachers are fascist morons, many are not. when you find a perfected profession, please let us know.

meanwhile, if you object to the necessity of using lawyers in a case like yours, why not write your representatives to request a change in the laws rather than attacking people who are, for whatever reason, willing to use their expertise to help you?
