I'm also looking for someone to come caulk my bathtub (on spec), dial in my carburetor (on spec) and give me a pedicure (on spec).
Would you be interested in a labor exchange? -
Dear Ty,
You'll be very happy to know that I found someone to design the simple logo (on spec). He completed the job well ahead of schedule and only charged me $700 for his design of a spare but elegant logo!

He billed you $700 for the job that he did on spec. Did he get paid yet?

Danny,
Of course he was paid. And the $700 was well spent for excellent quality work.

Ty,
I actually just reread your post and laughed. It is truly easy to caulk a bathtub. You just have to be sure that you have the right kind of caulk. Email me if you want more info.
As for pedicures, I'm lousy at them and so I go au naturel.
As for carburetors, I worked on one MANY times to get the fuel/air mixture right. Unfortunately, my beautiful but temperamental '74 was taken off my hands by a thief. I do know the name of an excellent and honest mechanic who has worked on my newer car. Again, email me and I will give you his contact info.
Best, Femme
edit: I also know someone who does excellent bathroom tile work if that would help. -
Well.
As a designer and photographer I'm constantly surprised by the never-ending line of people who want us to work for free. Typically this is disguised as 'for your portfolio' or 'potential for more lucrative work down the line' or 'on spec' (in this case meaning, "maybe I'll pay you if I use it. I've asked 5 other people to do the same work and the winner gets some dough"). Take a look in the design jobs section of Craig's List and you'll see.
Obviously I misread your intent. Please excuse my sarcasm.
For my bathroom I need to source some black caulk. The spots I need to redo are large so I'll need something thick. Thick black caulk.

Ty,
I used black caulk in my kitchen but it was an acrylic. I think that silicone caulks last longer in bathrooms but, unless you use clear, they are a little harder to use. You have to be fastidious in applying them and they need to set for a couple of days before being exposed to water. Also, it is might be hard to find black silicone caulk. There was a Saturday Night Live spoof on locating black caulk a few years ago, although maybe it was entirely tongue in cheek. Anyway, good luck!
In terms of freelance people being exploited by people seeking 'on spec' work, the man I hired told me that he had often had the experience of going to meet with someone about such work and finding that the person had skipped out on the appointment with no notice or apology. I know nothing about graphic design but it sounds like a hard line of work.
