Pennies to Dollars

Hey — does anyone know where I can one of those machines where I can dump in a pound or two of pennies and it will count them all up so that I can trade them for dollars? Usually these machines are in grocery stores but I haven't seen any...

    Subject: TD Bank

    If you have a TD Bank (formerly Commerce Bank), you can count coins there for free. The Coinstar machines in the markets charge almost 10% for counting unless you cash in for a gift card.

    You can go to coinstar.com and they have a locator so you can find one near you..

    I'm not sure -- but I think all of the banks that used to be Commerce Banks (but are now TD Bank) still have those "Penny Arcades"

    You used to be able to trade in your coins for free (didn't matter if you are a customer) and if you guessed within a certain margin you won a prize!

    I'm thinking of the one on 5th Ave and Garfield in Park Slope, but all of the old Commerce Banks had the "Penny Arcade" -- the one I walk by once a week in Manhattan still has one in the lobby.

    (if you want to do good, you could donate the pennies to Penny Harvest - it's run in a lot of public schools and the collection goes until December 4th. $2million dollars are thrown away each year in lost pennies and other change - penny harvest lets kids collect pounds of pennies and then they turn it in to the Penny Harvest program and they get checks they can give to local organizations to help their community. The kids in the school research local charities and decide what to spend the pennies on and all of that. it's a great program.

    Definitely use the Penny arcade at TD on 5th Ave - it's free and you don't need an account. And they have lollipops and dog biscuits if you're there with your dog. The last time I was there someone had a water cooler jug of coins and made enough to pay her rent!
