Mugging on Sterling Place And New York Avenue Yesterday — Brooklynian

Mugging on Sterling Place And New York Avenue Yesterday

My girlfriend was mugged yesterday around 3:30 PM on the corner of Sterling Place and New York Avenue next to the 960 Sterling Place apartment building. She was by herself and had just turned the corner onto New York Avenue from Sterling Place and was looking down at the screen on her phone when two teenage thugs approached her from the front. One mugger swiped her phone and the other slammed her onto the sidewalk. The muggers then fled east on Sterling Place to Brooklyn Avenue and turned north. The attack happened in broad daylight on a busy corner with traffic passing by and with pedestrians present. Unfortunately, the muggers got away. The police indicated that the thugs in the area are having a field day as muggings and robberies have been increasing.

    Sorry to hear about that.
They are having a field day because there is no fucking police around! Ever!
  • Sounds like some kids from one of the schools. 3:30 sounds about right. Get out of school, buy some wings, mug someone, hop on the subway, and you're home by 4pm!

Sorry to hear about your girlfriend, I hope she is ok.

When I heard there was a mugging a few weeks ago, I thought it was an isolated incident, but there have been several that have occurred in the afternoon around the same time, plus the shooting. I can't believe it happened with people around. If it is the same guys the seem pretty bold, hopefully their arrogance gets them caught soon.

Besides pepper spray, there is a women's self defense that someone posted here last week, and it is on a sliding scale basis.

Also, there is an organization, well, a group of people really, who have joined together to offer women free rides home from Manhattan to Brooklyn on weekends btw midnight and 4am. I heard about it on the news, and they said that they were all volunteers, and they were looking for people with cars as well as $ help for gas. I'm not sure how to find them again, so If anyone knows the group that I'm talking about please tell us, post the info here. Thank you!

As for the police presence, yesterday I saw 4 cops on Franklin Ave, 2 on each corner of the shuttle entrances around 4:30 pm.
  • ^^^ WHat happens around the corner from the shuttle?

I saw cops sitting in a car by the cop crab claw on Nostrand and Dean... on my way home from work I will ask them why they don't move around

What good is a cop sitting on Nostrand when people are getting mugged a block over? Seems counterintuitive

That's the subway location for 3 schools in the nabe. They provide crowd control and keep the fighting down.
I live between the subway and the schools- I've sen some hairy shit when these kids get out of class.
They don't move because they can't watch the whereabouts of every student. They stay on their centralized locations to provide safety for the students while they go home.
  • Safety FOR the students? We need safety FROM those hell raisers. :(

    I found the info for the free rides for women;

It seems the group has expanded a lot. They have free cars from zipcar and their site says they've given thousands of free rides in the past few years, and they also give rides to lbgt and transgendered women, too.

Yea, yea, I know. Some of the time I think that. But there's a lot of good kids in that bunch. The gang factor though (and not GANG gang, just a large group of kids) is intimidating for everyone around, students and adults alike, and it's nice to have some protection.

No offense, but I believe I'm the one who "found" the info for you.
  • I am very sorry to hear about this. This sounds almost identical to what happened to me including time of day. Maybe we can press for more police presence when school let's out?

Well, there are a lot of cops in the vicinity of the schools and by the subways when they get out. But the kids leave the immediate nabe (get on the train/ start walking) and the cops simply can't follow them all home.

While I'm sorry for those who've experienced recent crime, violent or otherwise, just because it's daytime doesn't mean you should walk around texting and generally being oblivious. I mean, you turn a corner, and there's thugs ready to pounce before you even have a chance to think about it, I get it. But circle round the corner WIDE, not tight. Give a large berth between yourself and others. Cross the street or again, put a large amount of space between you and a large group of kids.

Generally, they're all harmless and are extremely self-involved (they don't even know you exist), but you have to be wary of the ones that are standing around, looking for something to do.
  • i was at a bus stop, not walking around a corner...

also there were many people standing next to me including a family with a toddler!

i started cursing at the kids and then had to apologize to the family for cursing in front of their child. they were very understanding though. they also let me use their phone to call the cops. i hadn't even realized fully what had happened until they recounted what they saw to the cops, about the kid pushing me into traffic, etc.

My post was in reference to the OP's GF, actually, not to you specifically.
I never saw your post about your mugging- did you post one?

Messed up that it happened to you in such a public atmosphere, and by no means am I blaming you, but it seems weird that they would choose you, standing in the middle of a bunch of people at a bus stop and just mess with you. Did no one help you?!?!? If not, das fucked up, yo.
  • They should repeal gun control laws so that the victims can shoot the muggers.
  • Is the race or sex of the victim relevant to the crime? Are they targeting a certain kind of person to victimize? Some are suggesting that talking on a phone is high risk behavior, while still others are amazed at the lack of interest that other people show while the crimes are committed
  • I'm so sorry for your girlfriend, express. I hope she is feeling less freaked out and recovering. She should think about ordering some pepper spray or something, just so that she can have something to hang onto when out alone, while she recovers emotionally. Poor thing. In fact, poor all of you who've been attacked/mugged, there is nothing you have done to deserve it. Go easy on yourselves....
  • Thoughful post, independent mind.

More than just increased police presence (which I'm not against), we need more funding for after school activities for these young people. A friend recently pointed out that we have two big armories in CH that are inaccessible to the residents who live here...

this i agree with. Beacons were created in NYC to do just this but they seem to be mostly day-cares for little kids and nothing more in the area.

I 100% think that this needs to be done more so than increased police. if there is nothing for these kids to do, trouble will come around.
  • I'm getting my GF mace for Xmas
