Where to buy a used car? — Brooklynian

Where to buy a used car?

We've been trying to buy a used car from private sellers (via craigslist) since April and haven't had any luck. I've given up and have decided to take the used car dealership route, which I really didn't want to do, but we want to buy a car this weekend, no ifs ands or buts because we need it for Thanksgiving.

We have a zipcar reservation tomorrow and we were going to drive out to Belleville, NJ, but tonight I was reading over the forms for sales tax and realized NY doesn't accept NJ tax credit, which means I am going to be wasting around $300 in sales tax to the state of NJ if I buy a car there, or I'd have to appeal to NJ for a refund (which I can't find the form for).

In short, I'm looking for suggestions on reputable, used car dealers in NY (not looking for certified, don't have the budget) who have a good selection. We're not looking to pay more than $3k and want a Honda, Toyota or a VW Jetta.

Thanks in advance, going out at 11am tomorrow, I realize it's sort of short notice.

  • omg no, no auctions, thanks though.
  • I've bought 2 used cars from Major World in LIC over the past 10 years with no problems (over 12K each). The bigger problem is that 3K is kind of low for a dealer to bother with. Most used cars sold in NYC are bought at wholesale auctions and I doubt they would be interested bidding on the inherent problems that a car selling for 3K would have.
The best place to get a cheap used car is the city auction over on Kent Avenue 2 times a month. Everything from a police scooter up to a fire truck. Not for the faint of heart though.
  • We're hoping to leave NYC -- Long Island or Westchester. I'm reading that if you don't live in the state where you buy the car that the dealership doesn't collect sales tax? So we still might head to NJ, but I doubt we'll find anything worthy in the boroughs.
  • If I was looking for a used car in your price range I would go to Milford PA, Pike County, 18337 or Port Jervis, NY, right next door. Lots of small used car dealers in PJ, a blue collar town. 2 hour train ride to Port Jervis.
  • Why would you go there specifically? Never been out there, we could get there, though it's a little far. Seems sort of random...
  • Unlike Long Island and Westchester Port Jervis is out of NYC influenced suburbs. It is ungentrified as to weekenders buying up the property and it is pretty close. You'll be paying local prices based on local income. I think the average income per family is something like 16K per year.
  • Your best bet in that price range is to buy from an individual, sorry you aren't having much luck, but you are going to be hard pressed to find used car dealers with 3k used cars.
  • Northern Blvd in Queens has lots of used car dealers that are not affilated with a new car dealership.

    ...but I agree with LTS.
  • I bought a motorcycle via E-Bay a couple of years ago and it worked out well so it might be worth checking out their car listings, especially given your price range. You can search by proximity and inspect them in person before the auction ends.
  • Have you tried using cars.com or autotrader.com? I did a quick search and found several listings within 30 miles of 11215 zip code
  • Thanks everyone. We went to a dealer in Bellevile, NJ and got something there for $3500. But we haven't registered it yet and we have an in-transit registration. Is ok to park it on the street? We did already, but obviously don't want it to get towed.
  • Try, MALIBU AUTO CENTER.502 CONEY ISLAND AVE. BET.CHURCH & BEVERLY RD. BKLYN NY 11218 718.633.0030
[email protected]. Ask for Gene or Arik. We've been dealing with the auto repair shop for 30 years and never been disappointed.
Good luck with your new ride.
    Fancy
