Where to discard used motor oil? — Brooklynian

Where to discard used motor oil?

If any of you do your own oil changes... where do you dispose of the used oil?

Back in the burbs i could either use a county oil collection depot, or local lube shops, but i haven't see the collection tanks anywhere around here, and my google-fu is failing me.

Any ideas?

  • I don't have an answer (maybe Pep Boys or Auto Zone), but really... this is ONE car maintenance item that I've never understood as a Do-It-Yourself activity.

The cost difference is really minimal and most lube shops have a free car wash and vacuuming. And the oil change almost always includes basic checks like tire pressure and topping off your fluids (washer, brake, etc.)

What is the cost difference? And then you have to go to the store to buy the oil and filter, then... find a place to bring the old old. AND clean up after you've done all this. Seems silly. No?

(I'm open to being convinced otherwise... oh, and I've done lots of stuff for my cars. bigger things like changing brakes and little things like headlights, windshield wipers and air filters. These last three things are where the lube shops make CRAZY $$... but of course they offer "free installation" for that $38 set of wiper blades!)
  • In NYC you can bring used motor oil and transmission fluid to service stations that change oil. These businesses are required to accept up to five gallons of used motor oil per day, per person at no charge. If a NYC service station or retailer refuses your used oil, contact the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation at (718) 482-4885.

Some folks enjoy maintaining their own vehicle. I find doing a simple oil change on my truck kind of peaceful.
  • thanks for the info!

and yeah, it's a personal preference... i just enjoy working on my car
