Borough-wide Leaf Composting

Last year, our NYC Council representatives cut the collection and compost of residential leaves out of the city’s budget.

So a group of community gardeners, neighborhood associations, and concerned residents united to harvest and compost fallen leaves, and to document our efforts. We want to keep the compostables out of landfills and persuade the City Council and the Mayor to reinstate the Department of Sanitation’s compost project.

Leaves collected at your curbside will be treated as regular household trash. Don’t waste this precious resource. Keep leaves out of our landfills and create beautiful compost!

The below community gardens will accept leaves on Nov. 14-15 and 21-22, from 11am-1pm. A more complete list of participating sites can be found on NYCLeaves.org.
Please use clear plastic or brown paper bags.
No branches, twigs or trash, please.
Not all gardens are participating each day, so please check the calendar at nycleaves.org to verify garden participation.

    Thx for posting this! I see 15th St. @ 6th Avenue and Warren St @4th Ave for Park Slope...and I notice Garden of Union (Union St 4/5 Ave) is not on the list. Anybody belong and know if perchance this is an ommission?

    Hi,

    Nope, it's not an omission. Garden of Union decided not to participate in Project LeafDrop this year. They have a very extensive ongoing composting program that is already getting deliveries of "browns". They were also concerned about the logistics about what to do if the garden received more bags of leaves than they could use.

    This is the first year of Project LeafDrop and we think we've solved the "overflow" issue by connecting with several greening groups that have offered to take any bags of leaves that the gardens can't handle. We've also made arrangements with a few organizations to help truck the bags after the LeafDrop days are over.

    Hopefully, if this all works smoothly, many more gardens will participate in future years.

    Fingers crossed! LOL

    BTW.......I've seen folks bringing in leaves in paper bags from Lowes.

    Leaves are a necessary component in compost. You need to mix your food wastes with a 1/1 mix of leaves to keep the compost from smelling.
    If you want to try composting, you can get cheap ($50) bins from the Brooklyn Botanic Garden or many local garden stores.
    Compost is the hip and planet friendly alternative to Miracle Gro!

    Blue cat, not sure where you live, but most hardware stores have the paper leaf bags... R&A, Lowes, Pinchnik... at least that's what I remember, I'd call ahead.

    the PH Community Farm (St Marks between Underhill and Vandy) will accept donations this Saturday and Sunday.

    Bring your contributions in clear plastic or preferably paper bags. If you can’t make it during these times leave your leaves at our gate, but please contact your city council person or call 311 to voice your support for city-wide leaf collection and composting.

    We missed our opportunities to donate our leaves, but we discovered that it's easy to use a low-cost mulching mower to shred the leaves to bits.

    Good for your lawn and easier than raking -- we would have had 10-12 bags of leaves to deal with otherwise.

    if anyone else still has leaves, though: our garden will still take them, though you may need to set up a time for someone to meet you there (or pitch your well-tied bag over the fence). pm me if interested.

    FYI - The Prospect Heights Community Farm – St. Marks Ave btw Vanderbilt and Underhill is accepting leaves and vegetable scraps on most Saturdays from 11am until 1pm. The farms hours are limited during the cold weather.
