Time Warner Rant — Brooklynian

Time Warner Rant

I, like many of us in PS, have Time Warner at home for Internet and cable because, outside of slow DSL, it's my only choice. I've now had no service for over five days. Time Warner says it's an outage impacting nearly 800 customers in the area and that they are now finally trying to find the source of the outage after seemingly doing nothing for a few days. I know it's Thanksgiving, but life doesn't stop at a holiday. I hate how New York's cable companies have these geographic monopolies and how there's nothing any of us can do to get more responsive customer support or better service.

Thankfully, the Tea Lounge and other spots in the neighborhood have free wifi, but it's been a major hassle this week.

  • Been there, search the PS board and you'll find similar rants. I'm in N.Slope and internet has been fine, but I can relate.
  • DSL may be "slow" (I'm not sure it always is, comparatively speaking, to judge from the bitching I hear from cable users during peak periods) but my uptime was 99.93% for the month of October.

    I use speakeasy.net, not Verizon
  • I've been using Verizon for the past seven years. My DSL is certainly not slow, and I have had three outages that lasted less than four hours each in that entire time. If TW is telling you 800, you can multiply that by 10.
  • I also used speakeasy for a very long time for DSL. We switched about a year ago to time Warner. Occassionally I have a short period where ain't nothing happening. Recently it was out for two days and then miraculously service returned.

No doubt cable is a lot faster but I had dsl for a very long time and it was more reliable.
  • I just got my phone service back. I had no phone since Friday. The TV worked, the DSL worked, but no phone. WFT
  • I had the opposite TW problem this weekend, my phone worked, my TV worked, but my internet was very sporadic. I wish I had never left Verizon
  • Where in PS are you all? My RR was down all weekend and I'm on 8th and Berkeley.
  • Union and 8th with no phone all weekend
  • Plaza and Berkeley. Cable fine, internet sporadic. I was worried that TWC was throttling my account because I was using the internet so much. For the past two weeks I've been backing up 100+ GB to off-site storage, which is now taking more time than it should because of the TWC issues.
  • Longtime lurker, registered just to post this since this outage has been driving me crazy. It has been over a week now of intermittent outages with long periods of unusably slow web speeds. I called them three times so far, they claim its affecting "2300 people" but have no idea what the issue is or any ETA. Basically each time i call they say "we never have outages that long" then they look and say "whoa this is bad".

I am calling the NY TWC number at 2125396811
Is there any other number/site where we can get more info?

Its the Time Warner backbone so for those affected it will take out TWC, RoadRunner, and Earthlink.
  • Call 311 and put in a complaint to the city. They regulate cable tv franchises.
Also go to nyc.gov and the city agency that deals with cable, it has the acronym DoITT.
Also email Time Warner's corporate offices using this address: [email protected]
Use your account number, detailed information about the outage or slowness, its duration etc. and a phone contact. Mention Verizon or DirecTV once or twice in your letter as they are the competition.
    You'll get a response.
  • @BenYankee: I feel your pain. Was also without internet service alllll weekend long.

If you guys hate Time Warner as much as I do, feel free to join us for "Time Warner Sux" week:
  • I am center Slope, 3rd and 7th Ave
  • Odd, I'm near the 7th avenue F train and had no problem all weekend.

But it's not New York, it's the whole country where cable operators have a geographic monopoly. It sucks. If you want a new service provider you either have to get a dish or move.
  • You know you can get refunded for any days you are without service. I always do.

I've also threatened to cancel my service and refuse to pay for breach of contract.... they usual escalate the issue and I get another chunk knocked off my bill.
  • registered just to say Union/8th Ave, sporadic outages on and off now, very bad this evening. it's been going on for a few weeks. they sent a guy who swapped the modem but that didn't do anything. I called a 718 number and they just said they'd send someone out - nothing about the backbone.
  • See the following TWC list of service outages:

    http://help.rr.com/HMSLogic/network_status.aspx

I've never before seen so many problems throughout their network over such an extended period of time. It doesn't bode well!
  • woke up this morning and my cable is out. 7th st and 5th ave- box just says "APP" after rebooting twice.
  • Very odd.

We've been very lucky in that until this morning, service (cable, internet) has been fine. We are at 8th and Carroll.

Of course, this AM, cable is out. A call to their service number yields the following tidbit: "We are experiencing a cable service outage in the following areas: Brooklyn and Queens"

Guess the rain was a bit much last night?

    Cheers,

    Mike
  • I have cable but no TV because "Mystro" has been "initializing" since I turned it on.
  • Oh goody no cable this morning oh the fun.. thank you Time Warner....
  • As of 8 am down on Prospect Ave we have no TV either. Unplugged and replugged the cable box and got the Mystro screen for about 10 minutes, then got bored and put on a dvd. Cable box shows "- - - -" on its display now.

Cable Internet (Earthlink, but obviously through TW) and phone seem to be ok.
  • Here, too.....10th and 7th.

Thanks for the early-morning gift, TW.
  • Now when you press "Guide" or "Info" it says No String on the TV.
  • TV seems fine now.
  • Aonghais Macinnes wrote: TV seems fine now.
Not here. Bedroom TV in Mystro freeze and front TV with DVR displaying "No Video Input." I've given up trying to reboot them.

    Internet and phone fine, though.
  • On the plus side, I didn't have to suffer through "Morning Joe" this morning. Then again, I don't have to on any morning.
  • don't forget to call TW for your refund...what a pain
  • Out in Carroll Gardens as well. This is most likely pretty widespread.
  • Just saw a bazillion retweets on Twitter linking to reports (on NY1, Gothamist etc.) that high winds knocked down power lines in Queens, resulting in massive Time Warner services outages across Queens and Brooklyn.
