TV question
So Santa brought my roommate a flat screen TV a little early but when we popped in a DVD it was black and white. TV is fine. We did regular stuff like check the plugs and turn off and on. No dice. Only thing we can think is that we don't have a green cord, only red and yellow. Do we need to buy a new cord? Thoughts? Uber non techies over here.

Maybe the DVD was an arty B&W flick. Try something a little less highbrow.

most people dream in black and white.

Really? off topic, but I always remember my dreams and dream in color. Is that weird... shoot... talk about derailing a thread... -
leave it to whynot. I just want to watch my porn in color. Damn.
-
My resident tv handler says, if your dvd player supports HDMI, buy one of those to hook between the the tv and dvd.
-
Um, OQ could you ask OK to translate that into English for me?

Me too Mama.
I think only Whynot dreams in black and white.
What do you see Whynot?
Scarlett, try plugging them into another set of av thingy's on the back of the tv. -
Okay...
Yes, HDMI is the connection of choice, but until you have one of those...
I sounds like you're connected with component video, which has three video connectors - one luminance (B&W info, usually labeled "Y") and two chrominance (color info, usually labeled Cr/Cb or Pr/Pb). If you are listening through the TV speakers, you would need three cords total - the previously mentioned video cables and a Left/Right pair for the audio signal.
...Or one HDMI cable, if you have the inputs/outputs available on both the DVD and TV (you should if they're fairly recent). -

I clearly see Em playing ping pong. -
Ok , get the hell out of Scarletts thread before she whoops that ass!
And it's pong ping,ya hater! -
This thread was derailed back when DrJ suggested that Scarlett could be watching something highbrow. Response #1.
I was simply suggesting that Scarlett might be asleep, and dreaming.

I guess I thought black on white porn would be something that interested you. My bad. -

Maybe that looks like a really angry Mr.T? Don't mess with T SUPER SUCKKA!! -
Check if the TV is NTSC the american version. If the TV is Pal european version you could be getting these sort of problems.

Hey Scar? Is your remote set to VOD or VCR?
-
Sounds like you're using an older DVD player which has one yellow connector (three plugs total) for the video, and you're trying to plug it into the RGB on your TV (which takes 3 video plugs+2 for sound = 5 total).
If you got a new tv, it's probably worth an upgrade to your DVD player. I saw HDMI dvd players at Target for $30 this year, or you could finally throw down for a Blu-ray... -
As a quick fix, your new TV most likely has analog inputs as well. Plug the yellow cord into the yellow input and the red and white (sound) into corresponding inputs. You won't get the benefit of HD, but can still watch DVDs in color until you upgrade your DVD player....
-
Ok, so we need a new dvd player? When she plugged in the yellow, red and white cords, there wasn't a yello hole, only a green one so she used that. It's a Sony tv and no idea about the remote, Beave. Thanks all (except for whynot)

I see the Chiquita banana lady. -

She still hasn't told us what she has against black on white porn.
...this contradicts her previously expressed preferences. -
What brand of tv is it?
It probably has a bunch of different inputs, and it should have a red/yellow/white input somewhere back there (or on the side). -

If it's a Sony, I'd be shocked if there isn't at least one input that is analog (yellow, red and white) - maybe in the front or on the side of the TV? You'll have to select that input on your remote in order to view the DVD. But you can't plug analog DVD cables into the component inputs (red blue and green). Otherwise you need to buy a blue ray player.
Or you can ply me with bourbon and I'll come over and hook it up for you.
-
Note: regular DVD players are technically hi def (480p), so even if you're using a regular DVD player on a hi-def TV, you still want to use composite cables (white-red-green-blue-red)

hah. Although it's a bit of a missed opportunity what with all of the hole and plug possibilities. -
That, and all the recent holiday pole discussion (Festivus thread).
Here I was thinking Scarlett was going to walk away with it, not just get the, um... assist.
-
I have nothing against black and white porn but simce I have no depth perception, black and white movies are hard to see. I prefer ivory and chocolate.
So she could try plugging into red yellow white even though they don't say dvd. Mmkay.
Voodoo I don't have any bourbon. I find it increasingly difficult to keep in the house since learning how well it pairs with xanax. -
plugging it into the red-yellow-white on your tv should solve the problem. generally speaking, you want to follow the color coding each component has going on, what the text says below each input/output is generally meaningless.
by the way, you're using a really low quality form of data transfer between your dvd player and tv, any lower and it's a couple of monkeys writing down 1's and 0's from the output of your dvd player and punching them into your tv. can you see any other forms of output from you dvd player? As your setup is configured now, even when you get it working, you're really wasting the tv's new hotness.
