Mugging on St. Marks — Brooklynian

Mugging on St. Marks

Someone was mugged at gunpoint on St. Marks between Nostrand and Rogers late in the afternoon on Sunday. Horrible! Even more horrible that it happened on the steps of their building. These kids will stop at nothing. Everyone please watch your backs. Don't let these kids mess with you. I don't know what the solution is. Hoping some of you can comment to raise the awareness.

  • That is horrible - I am so sorry to hear of this. Do you know the victim? Can we get more details? I was also recently mugged unfortunately. I wonder if there are more muggings lately or just more people active on this board....
  • I think the victim is fine. Apparently there may have not been a gun. It was one of those cases where the suspect implied he had a gun under his jacket.

I know I'm nit-picking, but I don't think you need to use the word "suspect" in this case. Whoever did it clearly did it; that's a tautology. "Suspect" should be reserved for speaking about a specific individual.
  • There have been a number of muggings on St. marks (not more than any other block). Usually the gang boys on the other side of Nostrand cross over to this side and pick a victim. Their is a whole contigent that hangs out on the SW and NE corner on Nostrand and st. marks doing their "business". It has cleaned up some but yesterday (Monday) they were out in record numbers until a cop car stopped and dispersed alll of them. We know where most live and will help in any way to get them off the street. Did the victim report it? Part of getting a police response is to let the precinct know. Please pm me on this. I know this block very well and may be able to help.
  • I wonder what it would take to get police to be posted up inside the bodegas on those corners.

    Donuts.
I think the corner of EP and Nostrand is the safest corner in the area since the Dunkin' Donuts opened.

Carnivore is right, that's the answer to eliminating crime, a Dunkin Donuts on every corner.
  • Harharhar. You guys kill me with those donut jokes. Harharhar. You thought that up all by yourselves, right?

There is usually a cop near that Dunkin' Donuts. Just sayin'.

    Actually, they were suggestions.
  • nah..donuts just make them run slower.

some lady got her iphone snatched on the corner of eastern parkway and nostrand a few weeks ago.

    try again.
  • Subject: looks like it just happened again

looks like it just happened again

    8:15pm
was waiting for a traffic light at St Marks and Bedford. Saw a bunch of cops standing around a girl and a guy. I rolled down the window and heard her say "I didn't have any money in it, just my ID and credit cards"
  • Funny enough I was coming home late the other night when a guy laid down in traffic on EP at Nostrand. Guy crossing the street with me suggested that I go back to DD to see if there was a cop in there, but there was not. Fortunately, the police pulled up a couple of minutes later before dude got turned into roadkill. So I guess the cops are just in DD during prime hours and not at the wee hours of the morning.
  • Strange, I literally always drive down that block to get home and it seems very quiet

I'd be more leery of that one building on the north side of Bergen between Nostrand and Rogers. It's right in the middle of the block and there is always a mob of shiftless young dudes hanging out in front of it

Are apts east of Frankin really that much cheaper than apartments west of it? I was hit by theft twice last year but both times was out of my own stupidity. In any case the couple dollars saved a month can't be worth the danger. I bike and me and my gf drive everywhere except for the walk to/from the A, and knock on wood haven't had too many problems... maybe people need to get bikes.

They did that years ago. It was called the Stakeout Squad but after too many perps got killed trying to rob Bodegas they disbanded the unit. I guess it wasn't PC enough.

They do say that most crimes have a lot to do with opportunity.
  • I was just in a cafe when a cop came in. I told her I appreciated (what appears to be) more of a police presence around franklin ave and asked her if they are any closer to finding the guys that have been mugging people in the afternoons for the past few weeks.

She replied, "YOU WHITE PEOPLE move into this neighborhood, and dont expect to get robbed?" (I think she's asian, but not sure.) " And YOU RICH WHITE PEOPLE have all kinds of money and flash your laptops and cell phones and don't expect to get robbed. "

Um, the only thing of value in my bag is a lipstick that was damn expensive but this perfect shade and I suppose if I was robbed at gunpoint I'd give it up, but otherwise they'd be in for a fight.

"And you people carry laptops to the cafe, you don't think these guys are watching you every time you leave your house? Leave your stuff at home, and don't bring things you don't need with you. And you shouldn't be talking on your phone or listening to music on ipods while walking home from the subway."

She has a point that walking around oblivious to potential situations increases the chances that you'll get robbed.

But some of us "rich white people" are actually broke mf'ers.

    [/i]
  • Nice reply from the cop.

And "you white peope" aren't the only ones getting mugged/robbed at gun point.

One of my downstairs neighbors has a huge iMac right next to his front window. I see people on bikes playing with their iPhones. You have to think. You're in a economically depressed, under-educated, relatively high crime under employed minority area. Most of these people have lived in the area for generations and are probably feeling the pressure of higher rents. IT'S NOT RIGHT, but it's the nature of the situation. I don't get why people are surprised that bad things happen in the ghetto.

But we may be the ones who call police because we are so "surprised" it happened, and under the belief that they will do something.

...as if the police have the responsibility to keep us safe, and we have the right to wander around displaying valuables.

    (just a thought)

I see the point you are trying to make,Wondering if the police nabbed everybody who was openly using or buying drugs, all the people selling alcohol and loosies to underage kids, all the people committing welfare fraud, driving uninsured or improperly registered cars, Franklin Ave would look like a ghost town. 75% of the bodegas would shut their doors without the vig on benefit cards their registers would be empty. Most cops probably don't even know where to start gathering up the trash. Cops think whitey is dumb for trying to make a tiger change his stripes
  • texasranger, you have an idea as to what I'm saying, but you seem to perceive much more anarchy and crime on Franklin Ave than I.

I'm optimistic that change will continue to come to Crown Heights, but think that people need to be realistic as to where they presently live.

For some folks, Crown Heights represents a nicer and safer neighborhood than their prior one. They, too, are newbies.

For others, Crown Heights is a strange world in which they may be the wealthiest on the block.

...then there are the folks who are long term residents, perhaps afraid that the changes are going to result in everything changing, and perhaps becoming more expensive.

It's a tired cliche, but "crime pays" for a lot of reasons. Some of the reasons are failed criminal justice (there is very little punishment or rehabilitation), social service and education systems (there are limited options for a undocumented, unemployed, previously convicted felon who reads at the 5th grade level).

We seem to talk about these causes a lot.

Another reason lies with criminal acts being so easy and profitable.

...Single person walks buy with valuables and I know they have no friends nearby: score.

...Imac by Cool the Kid: score.

...person buying weed from "me" who I know isn't a local: score.

Yes, the police have a job to do, but people also have an obligation to reduce their own risks.

P.S. Let's simultaneously fund youth centers, schools and prisons until we find another solution.
