Sushi Sushi Sushi! latest experience at Gen
When to Gen today for the first time for lunch. My husband & I had the Bento Box Lunch Special, the price was right $9 plus a spicy tuna roll. I have to be honest, is was an okay dining experience.
To start, they were out of green tea. When we expressed dismay the waiter explained their shipment was coming later but we noticed other people were getting it and then we got some with but it looked like it was made with roots, he got extra points for effort. He forgot our Miso soup with lunch and then brought it later when we asked but it was cold, he reheated it and it was fine. I had the fish & sushi & my husband had the meat and sushi bento. My salmon was excellent as was his chicken. The potato side was ok, nothing special along with a noodlely thing that was ok. There was no sushi alhough that is what the menu said, just 4 roll pieces that were okay, nothing special, 2 were tuna, 2 were white fish. Frankly it was fine but I was not all that impressed. They use that soupy wasabi that I don't like as much and the ginger was not as tingly as it could have been.
The decor was interesting somewhat arty with a different sushi bar rasied higher then most with an design on the outside but there is not clear glass so you can not see the sushi or sushi chep working and that makes me wonder. The staff was entertaining with this whole Japanese Raggae/rasta thing happening that seemed a little displaced. I suppose I am used to the Japanese punk/rock n roll thing so this was a new perspective for Japanese adopting western culture. We enjoyed the music and atmosphere.
We read somewhere on line this was the best sushi in NYC, we don't think so. The owners best friend must have written that review. There are other restaurants we prefer but are new to this part of Brooklyn and have only been scoping out the sushi for about 6 months. Oshiama in the Slope is our current favorite. We have yet to try Geido. We've been to Blue Ribbon, which is mighty fine but pricey so we only go for special occasions. Taku did not impress us. There was a place to the south of Garfield on the west side of 7th ave that we liked to but everytime we go there there is fruit flies buzzing around and the back yard was a filthy. It was a very trendy metallic decor type of place. I can not remember the name but they need to clean up their act.
We also have a child but she slept through the meal so there was no way to judge if they were child friendly or not but they did give us an extra miso soup for her for later, which was very generous.
On second hand, maybe we will go back here for lunch or for something other then sushi.

Service was fine and friendly but I felt like I was eating at a high school cafeteria with people so close on both sides of me.
And what was up with putting Maki ( a roll ) on the Sushi / Sashimi combo?
That's only supposed to be Nigiri sushi and Sashimi !!

where is it? I know where gen is, never been there. Geido gets way to crowded but I do love the food, especially the spicy tuna rolls and the tuna steak! you can't really go around 7:00-9:00 unless you expect to wait at least 20 minutes, which is fine in spring and summer but brutal in winter! -

are you asking where taro is? it took me a thousand years to find it yesterday but it is on dean between flatbush and 5th avenue I think? next to that triangle sports equipment place. in p.slope, near atlantic terminal. -

just went to taro for the first time today, thanks to lobbying on this board. YUM!! get the asparagus tempura roll. and the unagi was especially nice.

Maybe I am the last to know but Gen delivers to crown height... ok, you have to pay a $5 delivery fee but we ordered the other night and happily paid the $5 after a long day. Sushi was fab. We ate in the restaurant a couple weeks ago. Also great... -
gen is okay, but taro is way better. i'm not sure how far east they deliver, but they will come to my house (prospect between classon and franklin), so it's worth a try. SO GOOD.

Went with my sister during Brooklyn restaurant week and it was ok. The food took forever to come though it wasn't crowded the evening we went.

Taro's the place. I've been following the head chef ever since he worked at Ginko on Union between 6th and 7th a few years back. Friday's and Saturday nights are the best days to go.

When you mention "displaced" and "Raggae/Rasta thing" don't you mean Japanese identifying and emulating Black Caribbean culture and not just as you put it Western culture. Otherwise, I might just try Gen which I always think is closed since their blinds are down

I'm so excited that everybody seems to like Gen. I'm moving up the block from it and everytime I see it I go "They better be good, 'cause it's prolly' going to be my staple diet."

Just been to Gen...Astonished that anyone would criticise the food....Its nothing less than extraordinary!!......the sushi rolls are both gigantic and sublime...the chefs are both Japanese and Rastafarian!!??...Try the slow cooked pork belly, its the porcine equivalent of toro.....!!!

Mrs. C and I just had a really good meal at Gen this week. I still think Taro has better sushi, but Gen was great. Their kitchen dishes are delicious too, with the buta kakuni (braised pork belly) appetizer being a real stand-out. The sushi is of the oversized American variety, while I prefer smaller more traditional Japanese pieces, but it was very fresh and tasty. And the atmosphere is definitely the best among the local Japanese options.

Okay, I know this subject has been beaten to death, but here's my two cents: Geido has such a great neighborhood vibe, and if I'm up for a social experience, it's a blast. Gen has glorious food and a cool vibe. Taro can surprise me with good or not so great sushi- but I end up going there the most, even with the shabby decore, because I don't have to wait, and I don't always want to deal with a scene.
So basically, I've got all my sushi needs met within a few block radius. -
Gen's just two blocks from my place, so I have them deliver entirely too often. LOVE their jalapeno shrimp tempura appetizer!

i just had the pork belly tonight and found it...okay. i don't know what it is "supposed" to taste like, so take my ignorance here into account, but to me it mostly just tasted like soy sauce. and as much as i like salty fat, i had hoped for some other flavor in there too.

It has a really deep rich flavor of... PORK! The soy sauce really just tweaks the flavor a little.
I love braised cheap cuts of meat!
