SO I dinged this guy's car with the door of the cab
Subject: SO I dinged this guy's car with the door of the cab
.. after a long and craptacular day at the office. Total accident.Of course, the guy was *in* the car when the cab door went thunk, got out and bitched me out all up and down the street. Great, you're 'feeling' me, it was an accident, alright?
Tiny little scratch on the side of his already busted-up SUV. I gave him my cell and while I haven't heard from him yet (this was Monday night) if he does call, or more likely harass me on my block, how much should I offer? $40? For that matter, anyone know a decent body shop?
I'm not gonna pay to repaint this dude's entire car.. grrr.

If I am not mistaken he has to take it up with the taxi company, not you. If the car was already dinged up can he prove that you really dinged it and it was not there before?

if he's going to get the ding fixed that you caused, and only that, he should give you the receipt and you should pay for it. (and if he gets 10 dings fixed and a new paint job while he's at it, you should pay a tenth of it, or some proportionate amount.)
if he doesn't, you should offer him something reasonable anyway. you've contributed to the car's loss in value. if your description of the car's condition is accurate, $40 sounds plenty fair.
i don't know what the legality is, and maybe the taxi company does have insurance for this sort of thing. even so, it doesn't seem fair to pawn your mistake off on the taxi company, which will contribute to its rates going up.
(sorry, guess i've been reading too many ethicist columns.)
if someone dinged your car, unless it was a total junker, you'd want them to offer to fix it. i would anyway.
sorry about your day. -
You shouldn't have given him your phone number.
It is the cab's fault. The cabbie is supposed to drop off and pick up in a position to ensure the passenger's safety and safety of others including property. -

Well, he's right. Folks who have no consideration for other people's space suck. Like, pay attention. You sound like someone who would cross his legs ten times during a movie, and kick the person next to you in the shin in the process EACH TIME, then say it was a mistake. I have no idea why people are so selfish, that they have no consideration for other's personal property and space. If you would like yours respected, you might want to begin with others. -

damn dude. you sound a little mad. it was your SUV wasn't it?
the person expressed regret. what sucks about the situation is the a-hole who owns the SUV and bitches someone out for what is clearly a minor mistake. only azzholes do something like that. we all make mistakes. -

Seems like you need to practice what you preach -
You're conscience is too strong to live in this city. You need to move.

For what its worth, never heard a thing back from the guy, and for that matter, haven't seen him or the car since.
Yeah, it really sucks when people who actually care about their neighbors, their neighbors' property, even the condition of their home or their block, when those people start moving in -- there goes the neighborhood. Take your flame-bait elsewhere, noob. -
