A Festival of Flood Lights? — Brooklynian

A Festival of Flood Lights?

This year the Menorah in Grand Army Plaza is far taller than the Christmas tree. It's shouldn't be a size issue--last year the tree towered above. What's bothersome may be the generator that runs for hours to shine floodlights on candles, creating significant noise and burning lots of fuel. Time for someone to light a symbolic candle of conservation.

  • As far as even mentioning the size issue above (for if it was not a point to be made, why bother pointing it out), isn't that because the Christmas Tree was nice and big last year (under the arch, lights changing colors etc.) but it's much smaller this year?

Second, the Menorah is situated on the side of a major traffic circle between that and the park in an area where pedestrians benefit from additional light at night. And it's only for a few weeks or whatever.

And like the Christmas Tree, it's supposed to evoke feelings of connectedness, togetherness and warmth in the community (aside from their more literal meanings or histories, of course).

So given the above, what exactly is the problem here?

This sounds a bit too similar to the whole issue about the Christmas Tree and the Menorah at the Key Food in Windsor Terrace, in my opinion:

(in terms of the complaints; no one's threatening vandalism in this thread)

    :lame:

To quote a contemporary West Coast philosopher,

"Can't we all just get along...?"
  • i haven't been by this year, but do candles really require floodlights? isn't the point of candles that they show up in the dark? (likewise lights on christmas trees.)

floodlighting an unadorned aluminum pole, now that i could understand.
  • Ummm, no, it's not at all like the Windsor Terrance incident at the link. The Menorah is great, it's the flood lights and generator that are annoying. Perhaps it just takes the generator company a long time to shut the generator off after the ceremony?
  • Okay, fair enough. It just appeared to me that by starting out the discussion saying one was wayyy bigger than the other it seemed a bit prejudicial, leading right into the next complaint.

But okay, I may have read that wrong and missed your overall intent of mentioning that point, and that Windsor Terrace thing was fresh in my mind.

    Apologies for that.

As for the flood lights being on, it doesn't bother me (for the reasons mentioned above), and maybe since they're there every day lighting it they opted to leave it on later into the evening (no idea when/how/if it turns off).

Sweet Tea - Loved the unadorned pole comment, ha...where's whynot
  • You know, it would be really amusing if the flood lights were only gassed up with enough for a day (meant to be turned on and off just for each evening's lighting) but it somehow miraculously got stuck in the on position and lasted all 8 days.

  • You have strange sources of amusement.

C'mon that would never happen.
  • Turn your car on and let it run for eight days.

Perhaps time for someone to get a hobby. The Menorah and Tree are there, lit up, for everyone to enjoy during the Holiday season. Can we have one Holiday where someone isn't whining?

no, but a juice box and a short nap will usually take care of it.
  • Thank God the menorah is taller. We truly are his chosen ones. This finally proves it.
  • I just envisioned a bicycle generator for the flood lights. If you want your holiday festival of lights, you better get peddling!
