About those Cesar Milan Lawsuits . . .
My heart jumped to my throat when I learned about the lawsuits against Cesar Millan through Brooklynian! I watch National Geographic Channel (Dog Whisperer) and they actually stress not to try the techniques "willy nilly". (get used to it folks - it's just me writing not a journalist.":)
I researched the information and found that there are 2 lawsuits but one is settled. The one that's settled involved his producer's dog who was put on a treadmill and (I guess) was not supervised (by an employee) - he suffered esophogeal (sp?) stress.
The other was brought by a couple (don't know all the elements of that one).
There were issues of abuse with e collars and rough handling: As I said, I watch Dog Whisperer and he seems to use a vibrating collar that's meant to distract a dog so that a different behavior can be substituted. The vibration is similar to a cell phone on vibrate.
When he pulls the leash on a dog, it's not supposed to be done harshly - just enough to distract - a quick tug and release. He doesn't believe in spike collars because he says the shock and pain just makes the dog angry and not in a state for training. His belief is to correct the dog, not hurt the dog.
When he uses his leg behind the dog - it seems as if he's kicking the dog - but if you read his books and watch his series you'll see that to be a distraction, the dog should not be kicked but tapped - like when you surprise someone by tapping their shoulder from behind. That will distract you.
I take care of my friend's poodle when she goes away and the little guy barks his ass off at any sound. He lunges at any dog he sees when I walk him.
I used the techniques I saw on Dog Whisperer and within 2 days life became heaven with this little guy! I was able to sleep through the night with the little guy on my bed, we were able to go on walks without constant barking and lunging.
I believe that many of Millan's techniques - used with sensibility are extremely intelligent, successful and humane.
NOTE: I couldn't find the post that started me on this research: It had to do with a 5 year old dog that refuses to do her business outside.
I think with regard to the Pomie on Brooklynian, that if she pees in the house taking her to a dog run and letting her see that other dogs pee in the park might be helpful to her.
I know I sound as if I'm mounting a defense for Millan - I just think that especially in the case of the Dog Whisperer I wouldn't throw out the baby with the bath water since used with common sense his techniques are awesome.
If you go to Barnes & Noble, you can browse through his books and get a feel for the psychology behind his techniques and training. Take what you need and don't implement what doesn't work.
Buy the book/video or whatever and you can create a lifetime relationship with your dog!
Best to Everyone. Just had to get all this off my chest.

OK. It is just ridiculous that someone is suing Cesar Milan. I am an animal trainer professionally wih horses, so I know and have seen many training techniques both good and beyond horrible with both dogs and horses and this guy totally does not in any way abuse his dogs. In fact, he reads his animals and is proactive in his training to make sure the dog is trained humanely and also takes control of the situation.
Just as in horses, a dog needs to know you are the one in control and Cesar would not ask the animal to do anything to harm it or put it in any danger. I have never seen him raise a hand to a dog, over stress it or kick one. You are correct that he taps the dogs with his foot to snap it out of whatever negative behavior it is displaying. It's a tap, not a kick. I've dealt with dogs of all kinds all of my life and there was still so much to learn from his show. And it all makes sense. AND you have to remember that these are dogs with some serious issues and may be on their last chance before euthanasia. The fact he takes on some of the dangerous dogs that he does says alot about his character and love for the canines.
Sorry, now I've vented. But I must wonder if the people who are suing him just didn't get what he was saying and so untalented with animals that their lack of training created what they may have taken as unsafe practices in teaching their dogs positive behaviors,
I like the guys methods overall. -
um, lots of people sue people, and we have a thoroughly broken tort system.
So what, someone is being sued?
It doesn't mean that the person who is being sued did anything wrong, or that their methods are wrong.
Lots of people being sued will even give the person suing them $ just to go away, and view being sued as a necessary, but annoying part of doing any type of business in today's world.
...this is what insurance is for. Lawyers and insurance companies clearly benefit from the present craziness (on occasion a genuine victim even gets "justice" well). -
Good to know I'm not alone in how I feel about his methods or genuine love of the animals!

I don't have a dog but I watch Cesar Milan and think he's great (and why would anyone leave a dog on a treadmill unsupervised).
In Florida if you sue someone in a civil case and lose, you have to pay all court costs - that's a way to stop frivolous suits
