USPS/Amazon — Brooklynian

USPS/Amazon

So, I got two emails today saying the USPS tried to deliver Amazon packages to me yesterday, but couldn't b/c I wasn't home. Alas, there were no terrifying pink slips waiting for me at home.

I called Van Brunt, and spoke to the manager (who really does seem to be a nice guy), and he said Amazon sends those emails out before delivery has been attempted, and my packages hadn't even been put on the truck yet. Delivery will be attempted today.

He said he's gotten a zillion calls, so I thought I'd spread the word, in case you are living in fear your holiday spirit is being held hostage in the Van Brunt package prison.

Of course, I'm terrified to leave my house now.

  • We have a locked gate in our front yard and no matter how many times I tell the postal carrier to just throw the box over the gate if no-one's home she insists on making us go to Van Brunt to pick it up. I went last weekend and an employee was at the door saying they were closed. It was 1pm and the sign on their door said they were open until 4pm. People were being turned away with carts full of boxes to mail for gifts.

One day another carrier (the one in the truck not the one that delivers on foot) rang my bell during the day (I was home sick)...I opened my window to yell down that I'd be right there but my neighbor on the lower level was already getting the package for me. I heard the USPS guy saying to my neighbor "They (meaning me) are never fucking home." WTF asshole...why aren't you home? Oh yeah...you're working. The USPS sucks.
  • Is it the white guy with dark, curly hair? He often rings my bell and, before I can run down the stairs, gets back to his truck and takes off, leaving me with a morning of fun on 9th Street. He's a jerk. I have notes on both my door and my gate asking to either chuck over the gate or leave at a neighbor's house, but I have little faith that I won't be trucking down to the PO yet again.
  • I've said it before and I'll say it again- we are LUCKY to have the USPS service we have here in the slope. When I lived in bedstuy I routinely didn't receive mail for WEEKS on end (then would sometimes get all the mail rubberbanded together, sometimes I would get all the mail for the entire building rubberbanded together) and I had four packages that family sent (all of which would fit in the mail box) just never come. The USPS said they were delivered and signed for but they obviously were not. I also had a laptop stolen (or rather "out for delivery" for 4 weeks before they eventually conceeded that it fell off the truck somewhere) and both of my room-mates had christmas cards delivered opened with the checks from family missing.

The fact that we EVER get our mail makes me feel lucky.
  • Yep...it's the white guy with the curly hair. He's been rude to my wife several times too.
  • The USPS service around here is terrible, terrible, terrible! I have found packages at neighbor's house, mail is constantly lost, some things I just never ever get at all. Just this week, the mail person (who changes constantly!) just dumped everyone's mail on a hallway table, credit card statements, bank statements, etc. Sucks

My favorite might just be when there is a notice left that they tried to deliver a package but I wasn't home, when I have been home all day
  • I recently moved out of Brooklyn to a completely different state. We get mail every day, someone can post something and I'll get it the next day. I can go to the post office and find a large well lit establishment staffed with happy workers eager to help who smile and laugh. It's like a dream.
  • I used to live on 3rd street near 7th ave and the postal carrier on that route actually knew his customers by name. It's the only thing I miss about that apartment.

There seems to be a gigantic pendulum effect where I live now...when I'm having horrible luck with UPS, I'm having great luck with USPS, and vice versa. Never ever good luck with both at the same time. And fedex always sucks for me here for some reason.
  • Mail sucks around here, but the mailman who works 18th bet 5th and 6th is hooooooot. Saw him on Monday while doing laundry. Wish could get him on my route.
  • if it's not an urgent package, wait for it to be returned and then call amazon

for about 2 weeks, my mail carrier wouldn't deliver anything to us (apparently, we didn't put our name on the mailbox.... and for those two weeks, this magically stopped all our mail)

i called amazon, and they upgraded my shipping for free to UPS so i wouldn't have to deal with the fuckers at Park Slope USPS
  • I am so glad I don't have these problems in WT. I had the same postal carrier for 12 years (10 years on one block and then 2 years when I moved just one block away). He delivered mail later in the afternoon that I would prefer (4 or 5pm), but I never got the wrong mail, and even after my change of address form expired, he intercepted mail sent to my wrong address and got it to me. He knew better than to EVER send anything to Van Brundt - he would just keep trying or he knew which neighbors were friendly and would get somebody else to take the package for me.

He retired and I have a new guy. This guy doesn't seem too friendly, despite introducing myself........I don't really care about that though, because he gets the mail to me earlier (noon or so), rings the bell if things don't fit through the slot, and has the mail properly sorted.

My friends have a business on the next avenue and they have a different guy - they love him too.

My UPS guy is also fabulous and knows everybody on his route. None of the "we tried to deliver" slip nonsense going on here - packages go to my friendly neighbors (and I take their packages as well). He knows everybody well enough to know who talks to whom and who will accept packages for each other.
  • I LOVE my UPS guy! I have had the same UPS guy for 4 years now and he is the best! He even tells me when he will be on vacation so I don't order anything during those times! he has been known to find me at the park or walking down the block to give me a package, he is great, wish he would deliver my mail too.
