Movie theaters
I want to go to a big, clean, decent movie theater that isn't packed to the gills with idiots.
I have a car and would likely go during the day.
Usually I do this at my mom's house in suburban PA. It's kind of hard to find indie movies out there, but there are some more mainstream films I want to see (Precious, Up in the Air, Brothers, etc.)
Any suggestions? do I have to go to LI or is there somewhere closer?

BAM is ok, but the seats aren't great and it can get crowded. I'm thinking stadium seating......

Something at the Zigfield in Manhattan?
-
^ I have never seen a movie there. Do they play mainstream stuff? I want to see the movies mentioned above, but not at a theater that's filthy and crowded with shitty seats. Will drive for comfort if necessary.

Do you ever go to the Sunshine theater on Houston? Near an F train, and I've been in an unpacked show on a weekend afternoon plus they have a nice selection usually (I saw Pan's Labyrinth and Cold Souls, both on opening weekends). I can't remember the seating but I definitely don't remember disliking it.

yup, its one of the last intact massive theaters left.
The picture is accurate and the $12.50 keeps out teenagers.

oooh...nice...thanks. It looks like they are only playing "Nine", but I will keep an eye out for other shows. THIS I could do

Both the Ziegfeld and Sunshine are awesome. Also the Paris on W. 58th (I *think* it's still there).

^ I like the Sunshine as well - even better than Angelika

Sorry for the thread derail, but I just clicked through on the Ziegfeld link... and I really wanna see Hurt Locker.

It's in my Netflix queue. Comes out 1/12 on DVD. -
The theaters at Battery Park City are great for mainstream flicks. Big, spacious, and very little noise (e.g. people talking on their cell phones, conversing during the movie, or making loud comments). On weeknights, they're usually only about one-third full.

^ thanks, Jack. That might be the winner for what I am looking for right now.

Battery Park is my secret ninja theater for major releases. I'm not sure how it stays in business because everyone seems to forget it's there. The only drawback is the ever-present threat of the "neighboring" building falling on top of it.

Batterty Park is definitelty the way to go. Its clean, quiet, and rarely has a line or a wait. Best of all, its got a DSW downstairs so you can combine shoe shopping with the latest movie release. All in all, its a perfect way to spend an afternoon.

AMC in Times Square. Go around 2 or 3pm on a weekday and it's almost empty!
-
thanks for all of the suggestions!

The Battery Park theatres are good, and pretty quiet when I've been there (on a couple of really hot humid august afternoons when the movies are usually packed).
Not that you asked about cheap , but apparently all AMC theaters are 6 bucks before noon on weekdays. Now I have some free time on my hands, I might try this out... -
^nice. I'm always game for a bargain
