  • Old Goat in FL wrote: ODE TO AN OLD BLACK COAL STOVE

When we first moved into our house on 12th Street, it was a short move from an apartment house just four doors away. The changes in our lifestyle were much greater. It was an old, no very old house with no central heat. In the kitchen, taking up a good size space was an “OLD BLACK COAL STOVE” This coal stove was not only meant to heat parts of the house but was a source for cooking as well. There was no warmer feeling in the world then coming in from playing in the snow or walking & playing in the cold winter, then cuddling up (especially with your butt) next to the ‘OLD BLACK COAL STOVE.”. Dry your hat and mittens, 5 minutes tops and don’t get them too close or they will burn up. My Mom used to cook some of the most incredible meals on and in that coal stove. Put a pot of Chicken soup on the back lid and let it simmer all day. The smell in the house was marvelous. She used to make home made Baked Beans in a roasting pan and simmer them in the oven of the “Old Black Coal Stove”. Toast on a skewer with the lid up, fry anything in an old heavy iron skillet, stick Mickey’s (potatoes) in the back of the oven in the morning and they made a fantastic snack or dinner side dish. Open the mickeys and put a dollap of Lambrecht’s Real Butter from a crock that was delivered by the butter and egg man. Oh boy. You can not duplicate those flavors on any other stove today. And so during this wonderful Holiday season, I pay tribute to the “OLD BLACK COAL STOVE” and the wonderful memories I have for it.
Warren keep those stories coming. I love hearing them. Love Ya Tbone
