Alternate Side Rant

You are apparently unaware (because you can't hear them) of all the eyes that roll at the precinct every time you call them. Give it a rest, move to one of those other neighborhoods you are so well aware of , up your zoloft, and leave us alone. Loony.

And this is why internet discussions are pointless. You are hiding behind hyperbole as an excuse. Just stop.
Of course I wouldn't REALLY vandalize someone's car. That was hyperbole.
Think about it this way. You know that glazed over, disinterested look that people give you when you complain to them about things that everyone has to deal with in life? That is the look that this messageboard is collectively giving you after reading your drivel and empty threats.
Ummmm...yeah right...
I think this discussion has generated tons of interest. Lots of people are responding and taking an interest in calling me crazy etc. for abiding by the law and being pissed at those who don't. So, yeah...ummmmm...you're wrong about that, sir. -

Are you a cop? Are you there? How do you know this? I'm so curious. Leave you alone? Seriously?

Dumb enough to get boxed in? This is your suggestion:
heres a tip: if you need your car on a tuesday and the other side of the street has alt side on tuesdays at 9, you should get to your car before 845, ok?
If you are parked LEGALLY, you should move your car 15 minutes before alternate side of the street parking rules begin so that someone who is going to park ILLEGALLY doesn't block you in. OR, if you are parked LEGALLY, you should move your car 15 minutes prior to ASS Rules so that someone on the wrong side of the street can take you LEGAL spot.
You're an effing genius. Really. You're brilliant. -

MOD NOTE
Here ends the tolerance for name-calling in this thread.
Please take a good look at the rules. If you cannot disagree civilly, go outside and scream at parked cars until you can.

if you know cars are going to park illegally at 845 (like they do on every street i have ever lived on in brooklyn) and you know your car is on the side of the street that is going to get boxed in, i would say 2+2=you should probably move your car before that happens
or, you can scream up and down the street and threaten to slash tires -
Snickers: the majority of the people on this board, like the majority of people in the world, are wrong most of the time. They're wrong on the facts, and they're wrong on the morals. And the more they know they are wrong, the nastier they get, so don't let it get you down. Instead see it as encouragement.

Thanks Hunter. You're right. They feed off the negativity. Thanks for your input all. I will continue to fight the good fight! Please be courteous to your fellow neighbors! You never know what could happen! Tickets, broken windshields...I kid, I kid...
Happy Holidays to all.
Move your cars.
The end. -
I used to think it was crazy that we were "allowed" to double park during ASS Parking. But then I realized what kinda mess the neighborhood would be if everyone had to drive around and look for a "good" spot.
Everyone who was parked in a "bad" spot would be in their car driving in circles looking for a spot or sitting in their car waiting for the sweeper to come so they could just get out of its way. Either way they are adding to the local traffic jam or slowing down the sweeper.
If the City stops allowing double parking we will have a mess. But maybe eventually some people will realize they don't really need a car in Park Slope.
Maybe, eventually. -
I don't have a problem with the double parking. I have a problem with people not leaving notes on their cars so they can be reached if someone needs to get out.
-
Here in Kensington and Windsor Terrace, it's accepted too. Its what everyone does (and yes, that DOES make it right when it comes to parking behavior). I leave contact info, as it's only the right thing to do.
The traffic cops here are ok with it, understanding there aren't enough spots on alternate-side days to hold all the cars. However if a car is on a sweeping side, or double parked on an alternate side, for more than 2-3 minutes under/over, they swoop in and ticket mercilessly. Consistent enforcement of an unspoken rule like alternate-doubleparking is the only way for it to work. And it does work.
Good luck with your crusade, none of us will follow. You should plan better. You'll get used to it -
swngnmonk wrote: [quote=pitu][quote=B&B68] I understand the need to double park sometimes, but the least people could do is leave contact numbers so you can deal with the situation.
^^ this.
It's funny - when I lived in Brooklyn Heights, the cops there would enforce an informal "leave contact info" policy. You could be double-parked "legally" for Alternate Side of the Street, but if you didn't leave a phone number visible, you'd get a double-parking ticket.
I liked that etiquette enforcement.
It should be law. Alternate days on one-way streets should be allowed only if the driver has his phone # and address clearly visible on the outside. Commercial vehicles as well when they have to do business at an address. Driver's cell # and the exact address where he or she is working at. -
The double parking is, in fact, a courtesy. Where the hell would everyone put their cars otherwise? People should put addresses and/or phone numbers on their dashboards. But, get off it; no one (except you) wants the double parking to stop. It's been allowed for the 30+ years I've lived in the Slope. Move someplace where there are driveways.

Bullshit. One could just as easily say, "If you insist on having a car, move someplace where there are driveways." This has only come up for me once when I rented a car, but if you double park people in and don't leave your contact info you are an asshole, no two ways about it, and you deserve to have your car towed or keyed. -

Well said! Double parking has nothing to do with entitlement and everything to do with the fact that parking in Park Slope sucks. Common courtesy demands that you leave your contact info on the dashboard if you are blocking someone in, but everyone should by now be familiar with the rules of ASS parking.
Thanks for interjecting some old school common sense into the discussion oldsloper. -
The next thing he or she will bitch about will be about all the cars circling his or her block from 9:00-10:30 if the grand plan of banning double parked cars during ASS is enforced.

This is really the issue. When people do not follow the unwritten rules of ASS days, double parking does not work. Direct your frustration at the people who do not leave phone #'s etc on the dash. It's happened to me a few times and it's really annoying. -
I used to have my cell number and house number (including bell number) laminated so I could put it in my front window whenever i had to block somebody in. Did that for 10+ years w/o problem.
Anywho....ASS parking returns tomorrow after time off for snow (I don't understand the logic of this when there's still a ton of snow around, but I don't make da rules) -

This just proves that the ONLY reason we have ASS Parking is to give out tickets. The sweeping trucks are gonna get stuck in the snow.
Today some cars will move, some will double park. The area between Union and Flatbush from 4th to the Park is gonna be a clusterf*ck this morning. -
Sorry Snickers, most of us don't have time for frivolous beefs like you being illegally parked in - we're too busy taking on really, really important wrongs like people using strollers on the sidewalks.

Why do the car-owning residents of this neighborhood think it is ok to merely move their car to the middle of the street forcing drivers to use the bike lanes to pass by or even worse, double park along the legal side of the street blocking the cars that are parked legally?
I was stuck for 20 minutes today trying to get in touch with a car owner who simply left a Chinese food menu in their window as a contact number. I had to play friggin' detective just to get in my car.
Alternate side equals getting your ass into your car and driving around until you find a legal spot. Move it the night before if you have to or drive it to a meter and feed it with quarters for an hour and a half.
Quit the meds huh?
I don't give a shit what I have to do to get this practice to stop. I will be out on alternate side days flagging down ticket agents on 5th and 7th avenue and calling their supervisors if they fail to write tickets. I will take video and send it to Arnold Diaz. I've already called the local precinct and 311 to notify them of this lost revenue and illegal practice.
There is no such thing as a "courtesy" for alternate side of the street parking rules. This guy was seriously lucky I didn't have a blunt/sharp object in my car or I would have bashed in his windows and slashed his tires.
This shit pisses me off.
Thanks for reading my vent. -
unfortunately, the majority of the people in pros hts (or, maybe just on my block) do not have the same idea about ASS courtesy. few leave contact info in their cars. i always do, but im in the minority. and, the unidentified double parkers tend to get pissed at the legally parked people when said people need to use their vehicles before parking rules have ended. seriously, i've had people yell at me and claim that part of the courtesy is people are not supposed to park legally on the not-alternate side when they have to get out before ASS parking is over. can you believe the entitlement and assumption, here? when i try to explain that allowing the double parked car block in and deny immediate driving access to the legally parked car is a courtesy and that the social contract is that when you have not circled the blocks sufficiently to find a legal spot, you at least do not inconvenience those who did, if god forbid we need to use our cars. i wish more people got this. i have spent many a morning needlessly disturbing the peace with my horn honking, attempting to get an inconsiderate double parker to let me out. and then being over an hour late for work because no one ever responded to my honking. i'm not the key-scratching/tire slashing type. i just cry and post on blogs.

These people are lucky that I don't own a car. I have already left a car with significant damage when I rented a car and this happened to me. If you don't leave a note when you park me in, I don't see why I should have to leave a note when I scrape the shit out of your car. -
Guess What?
Today is ASS on the side of the street my car was parked on. I got my ass into my car a few minutes ago and moved it. Across the street. The end. -
